NATURE OF WORK

The purpose of this position are to pick up and otherwise clear refuse, garbage, vegetation and other debris in all weather conditions from curbs and roadsides and leave collection areas generally clean.

Other seasonal clearing and cleaning operations are also performed.

The work involves constant safety awareness, the ability to recognize and take appropriate actions regarding hazardous materials and to use hand tools.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Lifting, emptying into trucks and returning to a safe location refuse and/or recycling containers. Lifting and loading into trucks debris, plastic bags, appliances and other items weighing up to 80 pounds. Replaces waste containers in an acceptable manner.
  • Obtaining the help of other individuals or equipment as appropriate to lift items over 80 pounds and otherwise working in a safe manner wearing the proper protective equipment and clothing.
  • Assisting with vehicle operations such as backing, turning, limited and temporary traffic control, operating packing or lifting equipment.
  • Assists with customer education of proper refuse disposal methods.
  • Assists with maintaining and performing job site and work safety practices.

EXAMPLES OF OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Checks vehicles, attachments and tools for general operating condition. Assists with keeping vehicles and equipment clean and in a serviceable condition. Reports repair needs to supervisors and mechanics.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to determine the appropriate way to perform refuse collection tasks under varied conditions and to work efficiently and effectively complete assigned work.
  • Ability to work effectively and safely using refuse collection equipment and associated hand tools.
  • A strong commitment to producing excellent work in the most cost effective manner possible.
  • On-going development and training of acquired skills and knowledge in the efficient, safe and effective use of equipment, tools and time.
  • Strong personal example to provide excellent services to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, co-workers, employees in other divisions or municipal departments and City officials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, other employees and other operating units orally and by listening in the activities of understanding the intent of and following instructions, discussion and work reports appropriate for the position.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT


Primary duties of this position involve: Remaining stationary in and on a moving vehicle for extended periods, operating truck equipment, and transporting and moving items.

Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, near disposal areas, in public works yard, and outdoor field locations.

Current position includes some limited physical requirements including:
transporting refuse, barrels, and items weighing up to 80 pounds.


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), have a CDL class B license, a working knowledge of how to care for, operate and use refuse collection equipment and associated hand tools and have not less than six months successful work experience.
