Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Academic Administration, the position of _Associate Director, Academic Administration, Architecture & Master in Design Engineering (MDE)_, is responsible for being a key leader in the overall administration and operations for the Department of Architecture and for overseeing the operations of the MDE programs, directly supervising the workflow and performance of the day-to-day responsibilities and activities of the staff, and partnering with the faculty leadership of each department/program.


TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership for the three administrative and technical staff responsible for managing and supporting the Architecture department and Design Engineering program, establishing and ensuring performance goals and standards of excellence.
  • In consultation with the Assistant Dean for Academic Administration, leads administrative, financial, and business operations for the Architecture department. Oversees department budgets and provides guidance and recommendations to the chair and program directors regarding appropriate expenses and budgeting; works with department chair to recommend and monitor appropriate uses of endowed funds.
  • Oversees all hiring and personnel management functions of the architecture department and design engineering staff; responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, conflict resolution, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and collaborative work environment; fosters a professional office culture which delivers outstanding customer service to the GSD faculty, student, and staff community.
  • Manages the architecture programs and design engineering program curriculum planning process at the direction of the department chair and MDE program director(s), including faculty teaching assignments and visiting faculty appointments; collaborates with the department Chair and Faculty Affairs to monitor faculty review requirements and help ensure logistics and implementation of faculty reviews occur as needed, as it relates to course planning needs.
  • Determines and tracks teaching commitments in consultation with the chair. Responsible for negotiating with and onboarding visiting faculty for the architecture department, MDE program, and a portion of the Master in Design Studies program; negotiates salary, course details, and overall commitment to the school while adhering to and enforcing GSD policies as appropriate.

  • Oversees all aspects of administrative support for the architecture programs, including program accreditation, academic policies, advising, degree requirements/fitness to graduate, final reviews, thesis reviews, admissions management and staffing, departmental open house activities, preterm workshops, department lecture series, department/program meetings, and commencement activities.
  • Acts as a strategic partner and key collaborator to the chair and multiple program directors to ensure that programmatic and strategic goals are met through effective and thoughtful operational means. Assists in the design and implementation of all departmental activities including budgeting and forecasting, visiting faculty recruitment, educational programming and curriculum management, and committee assignments; recommends agenda to the department chair for department faculty meetings and serves as a trusted resource to faculty leadership.
  • Handles special projects for the chair and works collaboratively with faculty in support of their teaching plans and goals.
  • Works closely with the Assistant Dean for Academic Administration to design, plan, and manage a variety of strategic, complex projects that serve to solve a variety of logístical challenges that span across the academic departments of the GSD. Uses knowledge of strategies and priorities at multiple levels to spearhead strategic projects and implement wellorganized solutions.
