  • Under executive direction of the Commissioner and with the widest latitude for independent judgment, action and decisionmaking, the Deputy Commissioner for Adult Operations provides direction and administrative review to a management staff responsible for the administration of probation supervision and services for those who are aged 16 and over at the time of the offense. Duties and responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the codes, rules and regulations of the New York State Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives and applicable federal, state and local laws. As a member of the Commissioner's Cabinet, the incumbent serves as primary advisor concerning Adult Court Probation Services and has direct responsibility for the overall operations and innovation/reforms in the area of services to adults on probation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Directing managerial staff who plan, coordinate and implement adult probation services throughout the five boroughs of NYC, including the preparation of Pre-Sentence Investigations for the Courts and the supervision of adults convicted of felonies and misdemeanors who have been sentenced to probation in accordance with relevant State laws.
  • Monitoring borough office operations to ensure commitment to, and attainment of, agency goals and objectives. Adjusts managerial focus, and identifies ongoing training needs and other interventions when necessary, to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Overseeing the allocation and assignment of staff in Adult Operations Citywide; in all boroughs, ensures that probation and supervisory probation officers are assigned manageable caseloads and have sufficient support staff.
  • Representing the agency in an official capacity, as required, on all Adult Operations matters including local, state, professional meetings and media inquiries, and participating in community efforts dealing with the prevention and control of crime and implementation of community justice approaches.
Minimum QualificationsA baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time experience in probation services, social work, criminal justice, investigations or a related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or

Preferred Skills- Ability to analyze and recommend policies and procedures with strategic foresight. - Ability to propose innovative approaches to complex problems.

- Ability to inspire and motivate adult probation staff to embrace and implement new approaches or goals as determined collaboratively with the Commissioner.

- Comprehensive knowledge of New York City and State Court Systems, probation/social service case work principles and regulations, trends and developments in the probation field and best practices in the area of motivating persons under supervision to lead law abiding lives.

- Proven ability to present the agency's position in meetings with high level officials and other government and private entities.- Public Service Loan Forgiveness Residency RequirementNew York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.

However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
