The Assistant Director of Clinical Nutrition will work closely with the Associate Director and the Clinical Nutrition Faculty in all aspects of the Small Animal Nutrition Program at the GI Lab at Texas A&M University.

Provides evidence-based nutrition support to inpatient and outpatient pets with various medical condition(s). Uses clinical judgements in conducting nutrition screenings, collection of nutrition history, implementation and follow up for nutrition support. Collaborates across specialty services to provide continuity of care and increased pet and owner success adhering to treatment plan(s).

Required Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 6 years of experience in the veterinary technical field or related area.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • 2 years of experience in veterinary nutrition.
  • Licensed veterinary technician.

Responsibilities:

Animal Health and Client Education: Directs a multi-disciplinary veterinary care team to promote wellness, maintain current health, and/or intervene in acute or chronic illness through nutrition support evidence-based practices in both the inpatient, outpatient, and consultant setting. Assesses nutritional status, formulates, and participates in implementation of nutrition care plans, including all aspects of nutrition support, including evaluation of the patient's progress, counseling and education. Assesses and provides individualized care for the hospitalized patient population, including patients requiring parenteral or enteral nutrition and/or therapeutic diets, based on the patients' needs. Provides preliminary nutrition support prior to formal consultation when new client booking timeframe is extended. Provides nutrition education to owners and referring veterinarians via up to date, reputable, educational materials or via direct counseling appointments. Develops and maintains a nutrition resource center for students to access within the veterinary hospital. Participates in national organizations that aim to further education in clinical nutrition.

Administration and Compliance: Monitors compliance with all unit, department, University, and government standards, policies, and procedures. Serves as part of GI lab leadership team. Leads strategic planning for areas supervised and assists Associate Director in developing and implementing overall strategic plans for the Small Animal Nutrition Program at the GI Lab. Develops, coordinates, and implements SOPs for nutrition related processes within the hospital. Plans budget for the Small Animal Nutrition Program and assists Director in planning and budgeting for the GI Lab. Supervises staff within the Small Animal Nutrition Program. Develops reports, analyses, and surveys as requested by Director. Handles special projects as assigned by the Director.

Research and Continuing Education: Participates in and supports research as it pertains to clinical and basic science nutrition program within the GI laboratory and TAMU veterinary clinic. Includes overseeing enrollment of patients in clinical trials, sample collection and processing, and grant writing. Maintains current knowledge as related to the profession and job responsibilities by regularly attending conferences and meetings at the veterinary hospital and off-site. Manages the budget associated with external research funding for the Small Animal Nutrition Program.
