JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY


Under general supervision from the Director of Tribal Lands, perform duties related to law enforcement, visitor services, interpretive programs, resource and wildlife protection, safety enforcement, and pollution control.

Supervise Tribal Rangers ensuring a safe environment for Canyon visitors.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned)

  • Enforce regulations/ordinances in the Canyons as set forth by the Tribal Council.
  • Detecting and investigating violations of local, state, federal and/or tribal criminal laws
  • Report and document suspicious or unusual activity to the Director of Tribal Lands.
  • Apprehending and detaining violators. Issue citations as required
  • Maintain and control access to properties with the assistance of other Tribal Rangers as may be necessary
  • Responding to emergency incidents and providing emergency care
  • Act as onsite information officer, give interpretive talks, and lead visitors on scheduled interpretive hikes in Indian and Tahquitz Canyons.
  • Assist local police, fire departments, search and rescue units, and emergency medical agencies as directed.
  • Maintain Tribal Ranger uniforms and equipment in serviceable condition.
  • Perform direct supervision of Tribal Rangers.
  • Must adhere to all Tribal Ordinance, Regulations, System of Internal Controls, and Standard Operating Procedures

  • Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement
  • Knowledge of the philosophy of canyon patrol and visitor safety methods
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to canyon management and visitor safety such as those pertaining to search and seizure; environmental protection; and motor vehicle usage
  • Knowledge of common procedures and methods associated with providing public security
  • Knowledge of proper operation of communication equipment such as twoway radios, pagers and cell phones
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to using firearms, handcuffs and batons
  • Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • Certified in CPR and Basic First Aid.
  • Must be able to hike three miles with a 25 pound pack in a time limit of 45 minutes within 30 days of employment.
  • Must be able to communicate well and interact with large groups of people.
  • Must be skilled hiker in desert and mountainous terrain.
  • Must be skilled in land navigation using map and compass.
  • Must be knowledgeable in search and rescue operations and security functions.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the cultural history, geology, geography, flora, and fauna of the canyons, desert, and surrounding mountains.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Must be able to hike all of the trails in Tahquitz and Indian Canyons in all weather conditions carrying a backpack with needed supplies.

Must be able to perform maintenance tasks during the off season (summer months). Tasks may include, but not limited to fuels suppression, trail maintenance work, trash clean-up, etc.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lb. to waist level and be able to walk carrying the weight.


Must be able to work outdoors exposed to weather conditions on a daily basis which can range from 32 degrees F.

to 125 degrees F.
