Institute for Vehicle Concepts (German Aerospace Center e.
V.)

  • Technology and System Evaluation Department:

At the Institute for Vehicle Concepts, innovative vehicle systems and technologies for road and rail vehicles are researched, developed, and evaluated.

In the research field of Vehicle Systems & Technology Evaluation, there is a focus on the conceptualization, modeling, and evaluation of battery and fuel cell electric drive variants for trains and locomotives.

Job Description:

Battery trains (BEMU) offer an energy and cost-efficient, as well as locally emission-free alternative to full electrification of tracks or the use of diesel vehicles on non-electrified or partially electrified routes.

Depending on the track characteristics and operational conditions, battery storage for regional trains is subject to high demands, both in terms of power requirements and operating time.

The battery storage has a significant impact on the life cycle costs of the trains, as in addition to the initial investment, replacement of the storage within the usage phase becomes necessary due to aging.

Accordingly, there are high demands on the cycle stability and calendar life of the storage modules.

As part of your work, an aging model for battery storage for use in battery trains should be developed.

The model should calculate the cyclic and calendar aging of battery storage based on suitable methods, such as energy throughput models or AI-based approaches.

Depending on the dimensioning of the battery storage and the load profile, the model should estimate the expected service life or replacement intervals of the battery modules.
