Description

The Data Scientist will leverage data from across the university to develop intelligent business insights and effect innovative change for customers and stakeholders across the organization.

This role will utilize analytical, statistical, and programming skills to collect, analyze, and interpret large data sets.

The Data Scientist will be charged with identifying the data analytics problems that offer the greatest opportunities for the university, determining the correct data sets and variables, and interpreting the data analysis to discover solutions and opportunities.

The Data Scientist will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by enabling University stakeholders to effectively leverage data and insights in service of the institution's academic mission.

This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students.

This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.
Salary & Compensation

  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: information technology, data science, data services, IT service management, or a related field. (required)
  • Experience using statistical computer languages, such as R, Python, SQL, etc., to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets. (required)
  • Experience working with and creating data models and data architecture. Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL and MDX. (required)
  • Experience working with relational (e.g., MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, Redshift) and nonrelational (e.g., Mongo, NoSQL) databases. (required)
  • Experience with scripting and programming in several languages. (required)
  • Seven or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: information technology, data science, data services, IT service management. (preferred)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (preferred)
  • Knowledge of current data modeling tools and ability to prepare complex data models unassisted. Experience with common data science toolkits and using data visualization tools such as Tableau, ArcGis, and D3. (required)
  • Knowledge of a variety of machinelearning techniques and algorithms, such as clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc. (required)
  • Knowledge of applied statistical concepts and skills such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc. (required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and nontechnical stakeholders. (required)
  • Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers. (required)
  • Advanced organizational skills, ability to balance priorities, deliver concurrent projects to various stakeholders. Ability to work in a projectbased environment using project management practices. (required)
  • Advanced problemsolving skills; ability to identify root problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of resources, timelines, vision and strategy. Seeks information from diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity. (required)
  • Able to participate in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. Thinks creatively and introduces innovations such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Thrives in an everchanging, fastpaced environment. (required)
  • Strong interest in data science and AI. Experience in open domain (e.g., GitHub). Published in the areas of artificial intelligence or data science. (preferred)
