Description

Emerald Mountain, AL is seeking a highly motivated and exceptional PhD student (f/m/d) to join the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS).

WIAS is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.
V. (FVB), which consists of seven non-university research institutes in Berlin funded by the federal and state governments. These research institutes are members of the prestigious Leibniz Association.

This PhD student position (Ref. 23/16) is available in the Research Group "Nonsmooth Variational Problems and Operator Equations" (Head: Prof. Dr. M. Hintermüller) and is expected to start as soon as possible.

The focus of this position is on optimization with partial differential equations under uncertainty. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing these problems and developing efficient algorithms for their solution. Implementation of the algorithms will also be a key aspect of the work.

There are two possible areas of focus:

  • Design and study of stochastic algorithms
  • Collaborative research within the interdisciplinary team of the collaborative research center TRR 154: Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization Using the Example of Gas Networks, located in Berlin, Erlangen, and Darmstadt.

PhD students in this program benefit from regular meetings, trans-regional summer and winter schools, and lectures and block courses given by guest researchers.

We are looking for a highly motivated and exceptional student with a master's degree in mathematics.
