Duties:

As a Biologist within the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Constructing, deploying, and troubleshooting traps, reptile enclosures, and other control tools, including checking all traps daily and handling/processing captured animals. Maintaining oversight of associated equipment, supplies, and project vehicles.
  • Providing information on the ecological impacts and management of Burmese Pythons and other invasive giant constrictors to a variety of interested parties, including other researchers, state, federal and territorial agencies, university cooperators, and the public. Managing daily activities of student workers, interns, volunteers, and lowergraded colleagues in fieldwork and data reporting.
  • Using a variety of general software (e.g., MS-Excel, MSWord, etc.) to track and manage project information. Compiling data, preparing summary tables and figures, and preparing reports for funding agencies and cooperators.
  • Communicating research results and invasive species issues to a range of audiences in both oral and written form.
  • Operating a governmentowned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear.

The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.

Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:
(1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.

BASIC
EDUCATION
REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.**:
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.


OR
B.

Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.

The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-07:


In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Super Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study.

OR


One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
