Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a responsible professional position assigned to the Microbiology Section. The incumbent serves as the assistant to the supervisor of the section.

All testing is done according to written protocol and the incumbent must possess at least a current State of Florida clinical laboratory technician's license.

Duties are performed under general supervision and entail considerable independent judgment. This position has On-Call Assignment responsibilities.

Performs complex diagnostic bacteriological testing on human specimens and animal specimens, for the evidence of infectious disease agents. Identifies organisms submitted by other laboratories.

Records and numbers of specimens received and reports findings, maintains records of tests performed, collects data, compiles statistics and submit monthly reports to administration, concerning numbers and kinds of tests performed.

Maintains a perpetual inventory of expendable laboratory supplies.


Removes the brain from animals to be tested for rabies and prepares and examines it for the presence of rabies virus, using fluorescent microscopy and other staining techniques.

Respond to On-Call requirements during weekend or holiday hours as needed to perform rabies testing.

Assists the supervisor with planning and organizing the work of the section.

Perform quality control testing on all media, bio-chemicals and anti-sera used in the identification of all bacteria. Perform proficiency testing on specimens provided by C.A.P. and the Central Laboratory. Keep temperature records of refrigerators, incubators and freezers used by the section.

Serves as Safety Officer for the laboratory.

As such, maintains an up-to-date version of the laboratory's safety protocol and hazardous communication plan, investigates accident reports, and assures that staff are trained according to the requirements of the Department, the Florida Department of Labor and OSHA and monitors compliance.

Perform related duties as required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

Skill in the use of lab equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.


Qualifications:


Minimum - Bachelor of Science, One year of experience, Current Florida Clinical Laboratory Public Health, Medical Laboratory Technologist/ Technician license or the ability to get the license within 90 days.
