Sunrise Day Camp-Chicago, a program of JCC Chicago, is a proud member of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings worldwide.

Sunrise accomplishes this through the creation and oversight of welcoming, inclusive summer day camps, year-round programs, and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge.


Unit Head

General Responsibilities:_


To be responsible for the emotional, social, and recreational experiences of a specific age group of campers; provide ongoing training, supervision, and guidance to the assigned unit staff; and work closely with other administrative staff to provide an optimal camper experience for that specific unit group and the camp as a whole.

Desired Qualifications:_

  • College graduate in related field, education, social work, child life, experience with children and camp
  • Documented experience with children and camp
  • Selfstarter able to work independently or in a group.
  • Ability to communicate and give/receive feedback consistent with creating a growth mindset culture.

Key Essential Job Duties/Physical Duties:_

  • Lift/move children up to 40 lbs.
  • Demonstrate physical stamina and agility required to be mobile for long periods throughout the day.
  • Stand for long periods of time and be able to run and actively engage physically with children.
  • React with physical and mental alertness in emergency situations.
  • Use hands for grasping equipment and play material.
  • Supervise children by sight and sound.
  • Must be able to rotate head side to side to scan the environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate, motivate and communicate with children and adults.
  • Ability to speak clearly and articulately with a loud tone of voice.
  • Mental alertness; sustain concentration for long periods of time.
  • Mental abilities: Attention to detail; manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • React with physical and mental alertness in emergency situations and assist in evacuation of building.

Specific Responsibilities:_

  • Administrative_ Prior to start of camp:
  • Attend pre-camp administrative staff meetings.
  • Work with the Camp Director to recruit, supervise and motivate staff.
  • Work with Camp Director and Program Director to develop onsite schedules for Unit to include a whole summer calendar, weekly calendars with themes, regular communications with families, etc.
  • Help develop appropriate schedules, calendars, events, etc.
  • Help plan and implement staff orientations.
  • Help plan and implement camper/parent orientation.
  • Confirm logistics for entertainment/transportation (if necessary) with Program Director
  • Order needed program supplies with the approval of the Camp Director or his/her designee.
  • Specific Responsibilities continued_
  • Administrative_ Prior to start of camp continued:
  • Assist Camp Director in carrying out special projects.
  • Return parent phone calls daily.
  • During Camp:_
  • Communicate effectively with parents and campers.
  • Maintain Unit binder to include Medical Forms, Transportation Forms, etc.
  • Communicate daily with Camp Director and Program Director on issues specific to the unit or the camp in general. Record into campminder system.
  • Attend administrative staff meetings before and during the camp season as scheduled.
  • Work with groups of campers, serving as their Unit leader.
  • Make recommendations for campground or program improvement as needed.
  • Guide the Unit in a variety of positive, creative socially beneficial camp experiences.
  • Work to develop a team feeling with the assigned Unit and the camp as a whole.
  • Always know the whereabouts of the unit's campers.
  • Set a good example for all campers and staff.
  • Be aware of the daily health of each assigned camper.
  • Be safety and health conscious regarding activities and camper participation.
  • Enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedure.
  • Identify and meet campers' and staff's needs as appropriate.
  • Establish mutually respectful relationships with each of the campers and staff in the Unit.
  • Coordinate the Unit's daily activities with Program Director
  • Help plan and implement the morning Round-Up program.
  • Assist in arrivals and dismissals.
  • Help create and implement rainy day program options for the Unit.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, supervision and motivation to the Unit staff and campers.
  • Assist Camp Director in setting tone of camp (i.e., staff meetings, enthusiasm)
  • Assist camp nurse whenever necessary.
  • Assist Camp Director in carrying out emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Track and record both camper and staff attendance and program participation
  • Evaluate staff (verbal and written, midsummer and end of summer)
