Books, Brushes & Bands for Education (BBB4E) is a Hammond-based non-for-profit organization that has been serving the community since September 12, 2000.

The Midwest Youth Choir Level 1 is an afterschool youth music program for students ages 5-7.


We are seeking an instructor who exhibits the energy to provide children in an underserved area with exposure to an arts education.

The program receives students from all across northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area.

Current students vary in age.

Due to the program being grant-dependent, lesson plans, skills assessments and goals must be performed at the start of each semester.


Preferred availability:

Monday evening 5:30-7:00 during the school year and summer.
Summer classes begin June 3 at the Hammond Public Library in Hammond, IN.


Hourly Rate:
Starting hourly rate $25-35.

Time needs to be recorded by the teacher and submitted in a timely manner. Teachers are paid biweekly. Additional hours (for recruiting, preparation, supplemental work) needs to be preapproved before completing hours.


Objective:


  • Provide a safe and fun afterschool music education for students from grades 512 in Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area.
  • Help develop singers' technical skills and confidence when performing
  • Work with families of all backgrounds to provide them with a positive learning experience

Responsibilities:

This position reports to the President of the Organization, Michelle Golden.

  • Lead a choral group with a range of experience and skill levels
  • Select and prepare music for the choir
  • Submit lesson plans and goals for the semester at the beginning of the semester
  • Ongoing recruitment of students
  • Utilize a personal network of students and parents
  • Engage other channels as identified
  • Participation in fundraising events. Two events per academic year, which may include up to 6 hours either as an attendee or performer
  • Communicate and work as a team member alongside fellow teachers and the Program Director

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis on strings and 3 years of experience teaching grade school children or equivalent
  • Strong ability in communication with schoolaged children, concerned parents, and fellow staff members both oral and written
  • Ability to accommodate and address diverse needs in the classroom
  • Ability to play piano is highly preferred; additional piano accompaniment will be hired for performances
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus, but not required
  • Availability once a week during the evening for classes and for an end of the year culminating performance. Preferred class times Monday evening 6:307:4
  • Must pass a background check
