Description:
Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with information and referral for walk-in customers;
  • Conducting focused interpretations (spoken) for various City departments by assisting with inperson appointments or overthephone;
  • Responding to and assists with customer requests, inquiries and problems on the telephone and in person;
  • Ensuring unique cultural concerns are addressed for customers with little or no English communication skills;
  • Assisting in the facilitation of the Department of Social Services projects to include community outreach events;
  • Providing written translation of City forms/documents into appropriate language format;
  • Performing data entry of client information;
  • Performing routine office tasks such as answering telephones, preparing correspondence, mail processing and filing and preparing routine daily and weekly reports;
  • Assisting in the facilitation of the Department of Social Services community partnerships and projects.

City of Richmond Department of Social Services employees are considered essential personnel may be required to work during inclement weather and times of declared emergencies.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


Considerable knowledge in cross-cultural adaptation and cultural inclusion principles/theories and practices; community organizing, advocacy, outreach, and partnership; familiarity using interpretation equipment; and Benefit programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, including requirements for eligibility determination of benefits.


Demonstrated skills in Foreign and English language proficiency (e.g., English and Spanish) to provide accurate and efficient written and oral interpretation and translation services; partnership and community building; communication, interpersonal and active listening skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisors, and customers sufficient to exchange and convey information and receive directions; and Public speaking.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Associate's degree in business, liberal arts, international studies, human services, social services, or a related field;
  • 2 years of experience in interpreting/translation with demonstrated native speaker proficiency for translating. Must have fluency in applicable foreign language and English;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certified Interpreter is preferred.

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


  • One (1) year of administrative support experience;
  • One (1) year of experience working in a Social Services or Human Services environment;
  • One (1) year of experience using Microsoft Office;
  • Familiarity with Social Services systems: SPiDER, VaCMS, MMIS, and SVES is preferred;
  • Must be willing to assist all customers to include English speaking customers.
