ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Instructional Expertise
:

Leads energizing, fun, and safe group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.


  • Instructional Attendance
:
80% attendance in all regularly scheduled classes, timeliness, and direct communication with Supervisor.


  • Maintain accurate attendance statistics per branch procedure.
  • Immediately report problems, breakdowns in equipment and any unusual situations to the appropriate director.

  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals or directs them to the appropriate staff person. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of group exercise and fitness trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Follows YMCA of Greater Whittier policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations according to EAP procedure.
  • Empathetically listen and communicate for understanding. Build relationships to create small communities. Build and nurture strategic collaborations within the community.
  • Participates in Y fundraising efforts.
  • Respond to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Represents the YMCA of Greater Whittier when participating in community events, as needed.
  • Fingerprints will be taken prior to commencement of employment and results will be submitted to the
  • Association Administration Office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High School Diploma.
  • One year related experience preferred.
  • Minimum age requirements of 18.
  • Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogens, WorkForce Link, and CPR, First Aid, AED certifications required within 30 days of employment.
  • Criminal Clearance, Health Exam with TB test, Clear Drug Screening
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications. Must demonstrate coaching skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Group Exercise Certification

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Arrive 15 min. before class start time, allowing the start/end of classes as scheduled. Set up any equipment needed for class. When classes are done return group exercise room to standard by retrieving all equipment, returning all equipment to its designated area, and any other closing procedures per direct supervisor.
  • Ability to coach and instruct scheduled classes and activities; to perform all physical aspects of the position
:

including instructing classes successfully (walking, standing, bending, reaching, and running). Ability to make adjustments with the direction of supervisor and member feedback.

  • Instruct a minimum of 80% of all regularly scheduled classes, informing Supervisor of any rescheduling needs two weeks in advance.
  • Physically perform all skills required of a Group Exercise Instructor.
  • Attend monthly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Attend annual All Staff Meeting/events.
