JOB DESCRIPTION -

CLASS TITLE: Special Education Classroom Assistant


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools in supporting children with various disabilities, including physical, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, emotional impairments, and mental impairments based on each students' Individual Education Program (IEP). Duties involve lifting and positioning non-ambulatory students as required, providing one-on-one tutoring, personal hygiene assistance, and aiding students with orthopedic impairments in using classroom tools and equipment. The role also includes supporting students in daily living skills and accompanying them to external activities like swimming pools and medical visits.


MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

May utilize non-violent crisis intervention techniques, provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as instructed, and operate audio-visual and photocopying equipment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Certification Requirements. Must hold a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), achievable after completing at least 60 semester hours of college credit at an accredited college or university recognized by the North Central Association, or passing a paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill.
Understanding of students' diverse disabilities, solid grasp of English grammar, spelling, and basic mathematics.**Ability to assist students with disabilities across different age groups, ability to follow instructions effectively, and competence in producing written reports. Proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is valued. Applicants without CPR training must complete the training as part of the job requirement.

Effective verbal and written communication, experience with photocopying and audio-visual equipment is beneficial.


Physical Requirements. **Medium Work:

Involves occasional exertion of up to fifty (50) pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to twenty (20) pounds, and constant exertion of up to ten (10) pounds to move objects.

Physical demands include reaching, handling, and fingering objects, speaking and listening, occasional near visual acuity, and frequent far visual acuity
