Duties:


  • Provides a variety of optometric services to patients, to include examining, diagnosing, managing and treatment.
  • Performs all necessary tests that deal with the eye portion of all types of physical exams.
  • Maintains indepth participation in the Optometry Performance Improvement Program.
  • Diagnoses conditions through the analysis of test results, medical, and previous eye history occupational needs.
  • Refers patients for consultation to other health care providers when appropriate.
  • Manages data and information that deals with the Optometry Service mission to include the writing of memorandums, letters, and reports.
  • Make reports as requested.
  • Conducts work site inspections as requested to assure proper implementation of the occupational vision program.

  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic reverification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position requires the completion of a preemployment Physical Examination.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or preexisting immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and Certifications from the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross within 6 months of hire.
  • This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

Basic Requirement for Optometrist:Degree**:A Doctor of Optometry degree from an educational program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) at the time the degree was obtained.

License: Applicants must have received a passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examinations and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice full-scope medical optometry (diagnostic and therapeutic prescribing privileges, including glaucoma, oral medications and controls as needed) in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience:One year of specialized experience as an optometrist which includes examining and treating patients with visual disorders and/or diseases. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Residency: One year completion of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training
