Position Description
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


Essential Duties:


  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and putup warning signs and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education:
High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.


Experience: 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). _Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis_. Licenses and Certifications:


  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Competencies:


  • Extensive knowledge of:
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Considerable knowledge of:
  • Incident management procedures
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures
  • Expert skill in:
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Proficient skill in:
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations.
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


  • Feeling determining size, shape, temperature or texture of objects
  • Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
  • Visual Acuity operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
