PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The New Settlement Summer Rising Program services students in grades K through 5th. Program hours are 8:00am until 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, July - August 16. There will be academic instruction led by DOE teachers from 8am-12pm, Monday through Thursday. The Activity Specialist will assist DOE teachers and take over from 12pm-6pm, Mon.
Thursday and lead all activities on Fridays.

The program provides stimulating hands-on art, literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities and Physical Fitness.

We use an age-appropriate, positive youth-development approach that includes health, fitness and community engagement.

We have partnerships with Children?s Museum of Manhattan, NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, New York Cares, CookShop, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Bronx Care Health System, and ABADA Capoeira.


JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Program Director, the Activity Specialist is responsible for identifying suitable age-appropriate curricula, create age and developmentally appropriate activities and lesson plans, and overseeing implementation of program activities.


Job Duties include but not limited to:

  • Understands and enforces program expectations, policies, and protocols to ensure a safe and respectful environment in alignment with agency, school, and funder protocols and guidelines.
  • Actively monitors, engages and ensures safety of participants during all program activities, including pickup, snack, transitions, clubs, activities, and dismissal.
  • Designs and leads enriching and developmental activities for youth (sports, games, literacy, arts and crafts, theatre, etc.).
  • Develops and implements ageappropriate curriculum; submit sequenced lesson plans.
  • Demonstrates professional and appropriate communication with students, teachers, staff, parents and other stakeholders.
  • Engages with youth and uses appropriate strategies to preemptively defuse inappropriate behavior and encourage positive interactions demonstrating effective program and classroom management.
  • Ensures proper care of all area materials, organizes room and reports any misused or damaged materials to a supervisor to ensure safety and effective operations.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and completes professional development hours indicated at the time of hiring.
  • Responsible for tracking, completion and timely submission of all programs reports relative to this position, including participant attendances, performance, supply requests, lesson plans and timesheets.
  • Supports organization of special events like culminating showcases, awards, trainings, and parent meetings.
  • Communicates with direct supervisor about any issues including schedule modifications or important behavioral or environmental difficulties.
  • Actively participates in training and professional development to continuously increase knowledge, principles and practices of child and youth development and use this knowledge to achieve the program's goals.
  • Always demonstrates professional behavior. Serves as a positive role model for participants and maintains appropriate and professional boundaries with them.
  • Promotes responsible and healthy decisionmaking among all participants.
  • Promotes an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity.
  • Develops socialemotional skills, leadership skills, teambuilding and selfadvocacy among all participants.
  • Fosters academic and nonacademic skills and broaden participant horizons.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
& EXPERIENCE:


  • Ability to work in a publicschool setting, both indoor and outdoor, and/or from home with appropriate: visual and audio connectivity; ability to give undivided attention; absence of childcare or other obligations during work hours.
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED and must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher education.
  • One year Afterschool work experience, one full summer camp work experience, or two years related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate leadership, community service, civic engagement or enrichment activities.
  • Ability to develop group lesson plans and curricula.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strengthsbased positive youth development perspective.
  • Demonstrated attendance and punctuality in meeting required schedule.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion.
  • Computer literacy ? specifically Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office 365, Outlook Email, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google classroom.
  • Must have access to a computer/laptop with a camera, microphone and internet access.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must be cleared and maintain clearance throughout duration of employment by NYS DOH and DOE fingerprinting screening, NYS Central Registrar Background Check, 3 Refere
