This position works under the general direction of the Assistant Manager of Athletic Grounds.

Supervises groundskeepers in the general maintenance of athletic turfs and grounds construction activities to provide for a visually inviting, safe and aesthetic environment for students, faculty, visitors, and staff, as well as for fans watching televised events.

Ensures that goals and objectives are met with strict adherence to NCAA and conference rules and regulations as well as policies and procedures of the department, the University, and the Arizona Board of Regents.

Essential Duties

  • Responsible for the daily preparation of athletic fields and grounds for practices, games, and events.
  • Primary responsibilities will require all types of turf grass management including but not limited to: mowing, trimming, blowing, vertislicing, aerating, overseeding, sodding, fertilizing, topdressing, pesticide management, line and logo painting, irrigation management and repair.
  • This position will use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as shovels, rakes, brooms, blowers, string trimmer, edger, sodcutter, utility vehicle, bunker rake, mowers, tractors, forklifts, aerators, etc.
  • Requires the ability to communicate clearly with coaches and staff
  • Maintains a working budget.
  • Organize and lead student labor.

Minimum Qualifications


Associate's degree in turf management or related field, plus 2 years of related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieve.

Employee may be required to possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in turf management or related field preferred.
  • Experience of athletic field management at NCAA or professional level. (1year)
  • Evidence of experience working with coaches and administrators.
  • Evidence of experience establishing and maintaining budgets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper operation, use and care of equipment, tools and procedures of grounds construction and care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of materials, methods and practices used to properly care for and maintain landscape areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting procedures/methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper calculations used to measure/mix/prepare chemical treatments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intercollegiate sports fields dimensions and markings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of conference and NCAA rules and policies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of athletic line marking.
  • Evidence of experience in operating grounds maintenance and grounds construction equipment and tools, to include heavy machinery. Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.
  • Evidence of experience in coordinating the work activities of self and others.
  • Evidence of experience in reading and following directions.
  • Evidence of experience in working effectively as a member of and/or leading a team.

Working Environment

  • Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability and flexibility to work occasional long hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • May supervise staff, students workers, and volunteers.
