    DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

    The MAAC Community Charter School (MCCS) is an alternative, full-day public high school eight miles from the Mexican border in Chula Vista, California. Its charter is held by the Sweetwater Union High School District. MCCS has a dedicated faculty and staff that serve high risk at-risk youth from Grade 9 through age 20, with an onsite YouthBuild program for 18-24 year olds. Many of the students have dropped out previously or have not been successful in their prior educational settings for a variety of reasons and/or they prefer a small school environment with a student-centered curriculum. Majority of the students speak and/or understand Spanish. At MAAC Community Charter School, our mission is to prepare our students for college, career and community service.     DEFINITION

    Under supervision, the Secondary Classroom Teacher utilizes appropriate instructional skills and differentiated strategies and provides students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential enables students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society; performs related duties as assigned.

    Secondary Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing instruction allowed by their Credential, including but not limited to one or more of the following areas of study: Physical Science and Life Sciences, Mathematics, Social Science, (Geography, History, U.S. Government, Economics) English (writing and literature), ESL, Fine Arts, Language, Electives, Health and Physical Education Special Education and/or Independent Studies. The incumbent participates in developing course curriculum, lesson plans, provides instruction to students, maintains a safe and orderly school environment, assesses and evaluates student accomplishments, maintains required student records and files and communicates with faculty, students and parents regarding student progress.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintains accurate student files aligned with state audit guidelines.
    • Plans instructional objectives for assigned grade level and/or subject area consistent with courses of study and curriculum guides which meet MAAC's educational goals and objectives.
    • Develops and prepares lesson plans and appropriate instructional activities that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
    • Provides instruction in assigned area in accordance with MAAC guidelines, adopted course outlines and instructional performance objectives for a specific area of study.
    • Ensures that students meet goals and objectives of the assigned course of study according to the student's level of abilities and interests.
    • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the students or student groups involved.
    • Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students; this includes, but is not limited to:
    • Utilizing a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques.
    • Establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment;
    • Maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
    • Supervising hallways, student restrooms and immediate grounds as assigned.
    • Assists in the development of citizenship, self image, responsibility and ethical values, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers.
    • Provides appropriate individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes and cultural backgrounds.
    • Provides progress reports as required; assesses student achievement through formal and informal testing; prepares grade reports; confers with colleagues, students and parents regarding student progress as needed; makes referrals to administrators or school counselor as needed.

    • Participates in curriculum development and materials evaluation; assists and participates in the selection of books, instructional materials and supplies and maintains required inventory records.
    • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication and positive and appropriate relationships with students and parents.
    • Maintains cooperative, professional attitudes with students, parents, peers, supervisors and administration and presents a positive role model for students that supports MAAC mission and objectives.
    • Conducts conferences and communicates with students, parents, and support personnel concerning individual students' needs.
    • Be available to students and parents for educational-related purposes outside school hours when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms; participate in supervising student events and activities as assigned such as graduation, prom, open house, etc....
    • Attends staff meetings and in-service activities as required; serves on staff committees as required.
    • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education provided by MAAC and/or administrative approved self-selected professional growth activities.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

    Knowledge of:

    • ELL education methods.
    • Content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment for assigned instructional area (English literature, writing and ESL, Project-based Learning, Critical Pedagogy).
    • Student academic growth and development applicable to the grade assigned.
    • Procedures and practices of classroom safety.
    • Principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
    • Administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping and filing practices and procedures.
    • Basic research techniques, methods and procedures.
    • Applicable state regulations.

    Ability to:

    • Plan and implement lessons based on state, district and MCCS course of study and the needs and abilities of students.
    • Apply current research and theory to established courses of instruction.
    • Plan, develop, implement, monitor, supervise and oversee the daily activities and operations of a classroom.
    • Develop and implement appropriate curriculum, standards-based lesson plans and instructional strategies to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse high school-aged students.
    • Create and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
    • Instruct and encourage learning in high school-aged children.
    • Organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
    • Organize and maintain confidential student records and files.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
    • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
    • Use tact, discretion, courtesy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult individuals and situations.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, student, parents and others encountered in the course of work.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provides instruction according to his/her assignment in accordance with the course outlines, using appropriate course notes and suggestions which incorporate performance objectives for his/her specific area of study.
    • Provides, within his/her control learning experiences and a classroom environment necessary to ensure that students meet MCCS established goals and objectives and the more limited goals and objectives of the assigned course of study according to the student's level of abilities and interests.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATION

    • Bachelor's degree in Language Arts, Education, ESL.
    • Completion of a single subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching.
    • Single subject teaching credential
    • English Learner authorization ELAS or ELA1 minimum; BA (Bilingual Authorization) Preferred
    • Teaching experience in a high school or middle school; 3 years or more preferred.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

    HEALTH STATUS

    Must have a physical examination, TB clearance and a drug screen by a doctor/clinic designated by MAAC as well as immunization records for influenza*, pertussis and measles as required by state and federal regulations prior to the first day of employment.

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit, talk or hear both in person and by telephone, uses hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls, reach with hands and arms. An employee also is regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, climb or balance and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

    Mental Demands

    While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret information; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use basic math; learn and apply new information or skills; work under intensive deadlines and interact with MAAC management, administrators, staff, teachers, parents, family members, children and others encountered in the course of work.

    BACKGROUND CLEARANCE

    All positions are subject to a background/education check, DMV check, NSOR, exclusion and debarment checks prior to hire and periodically throughout employment as required by various funding sources.

    Note: California Start law requires background criminal checks on anyone who works in a licensed childcare facility who is not a client. Must have or obtain a current criminal background check clearance, signed criminal record statement, and signed Acknowledgement to Report Child Abuse form prior to the first day of employment.

    TRANSPORTATION

    Must have and maintain a valid California Driver's License, daily use of a personal, insured vehicle, and have and maintain a motor vehicle driving record acceptable to MAAC's insurance carrier. Incumbents will be enrolled in the California DMV Pull Program.
