Summary:


  • Cultural brokers are specific to immigrant, refugee, and/or racially and ethnically diverse populations who work together with other CFI staff and volunteer Family Navigators to help culturally and linguistically diverse family members of children and adults with disabilities (aged 030) to identify and find information, services, community supports that meet their needs. Cultural brokers also outreach to organizations and groups in Virginia (and the country) with whom the CFI and the Partnership should partner to meet the diverse needs of families with children and adults with disabilities. This position open rank with an anticipated slotting of Senior Coordinator CE 2 in the Community Engagement & Outreach Job Family, Job Code This position is not ORPeligible.

Typical Duties

Community Relations:


  • Does community mapping of cultural/ethnic associations, groups and organizations for Latino/a/x communities to help the CFI maintain uptodate information on resources, services, contacts, etc. specifically related to supporting families of children with disabilities
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with leaders and professionals in Latino/a/x communities to promote the mission, goals, and services of the CFI and Partnership to the community, including training on disability laws and services for which their child and family may be eligible

Family Support:


  • Serves as a 'bridge' between service providers and Latino/a/x families of children/young adults with disabilities by providing direct emotional, informational and systems navigational support to at least 30 families each year, helping them to problem solve getting needs met, learning about systems and services for which their child may be eligible, and sharing examples from personal experiences
  • Recruits Latino/a/x family members of children with disabilities to serve as "family navigators' to provide family to family support to other families
  • Maintains Grupos Caminos support group Latino/a/x families of children with disabilities
  • Maintains up to date information on professional and family support in the CFIs Salesforce data system

Organization Support:


  • Attends and participates as a team member in regular CFI and Partnership staff meetings/trainings, including any regional meetings with other CFI staff.
  • Serves as a project coordinator assisting, developing and participating in programs or projects assigned by the supervisor to ensure the integration of Latino/a/x cultural perspective to these programs and to grow the CFI cultural broker program with other cultures

Professional Development:


  • Attends mandatory Partnership, CFI and/or VCU employee orientation and ongoing staff development opportunities.
  • Participates in at least three face to face or virtual training, seminars or courses and at least one state conference every year to improve service knowledge and skills
  • Convenes and organizes Cultural Broker team discussions (approximately 4 times/year) and ensures compliance with completing Cultural Broker workplans Assists the CFI and our funders in conceptualizing and developing disability related products (articles, fact sheets, presentations, and other publications) localized to Latino/a/x communities

Typical Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma/GED and 13 years relevant professional experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training

Typical Expertise:


  • Represent Latino/a/x community. (Fluency in the Spanish language)
  • Ability to work with and engage children and adults with disabilities
  • Have a good working knowledge of local resources, services, disability service delivery systems
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to communicate in a clear, positive manner with diverse clients and staff
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU. (Including experience supporting a workplace where differences are celebrated, people feel empowered to bring their authentic selves to work, and everyone has equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.)
  • Ability to collaborate, and to be selfdirected, selfmotivated, organized, and able to multitask
  • Have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office, Google Suites, and other webbased software

Preferred Expertise

  • Bachelor degree with 5+ years of experience working with Latino/a/x families of children with disabilities

Commitment:


  • This is a grantfunded position that will be renewed each year dependent upon performance and funding.
  • Some travel will be expected to attend meetings, conferences, and presentations.
