This position is established to provide regularly scheduled support for the general operation of the SCVRB Zebrafish Core Facility including feeding, general husbandry and population management as provided in facility SOPs.

Physical plant inspection and implementation of response plans as an aspect of observed variation. Assist users in the effective use of the facility resources.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.


Department Description

  • The primary mission of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus, is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary respiratory systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields. With over 200 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Lab Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Anesthesia, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology). The total extramural funding is $34 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Basic computer skills including the use of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Weekend and Holiday work is required. Minimum 50% time.
  • The physical capabilities are also a critical aspect of this job. Feeding requires the manipulation of a feeding bottle up to 450g or 1 pound of weight, often at above shoulder level or above for 3045 minutelong feeding sessions. Feeding also requires repeated movement up and down small stools or short ladders and stooping or crouching to feed and observe fish at the top and bottom of the housing racks.
  • Lifting commonly involves the removal of 3L (7 pounds) tanks and 6L (13 pounds) tanks often at or above shoulder height.
  • Ability to maintain a clean work/research environment to avoid comprising quality of lab specimens.
  • Good interpersonal communications skills including effective teamwork experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or higher in biology (or related life sciences) or chemistry.
  • Background in animal care, veterinary or animal research
  • Interested in personal growth in animalbased research science.
