    Basic Function

    Under the direction of an administrator or manager, checks tools in and out to students and instructors; inspects, repairs, and maintains hand tools and equipment; maintains tool room in a clean and orderly condition.

    Representative Duties
    1. Assists Automotive and Welding instructors in laboratories and classrooms. E
    2. Answers questions and provides instructional assistance to students individually or in small groups. E
    3. Operates and assists students with tools and equipment used in laboratory and classroom environments. E
    4. Checks tools and equipment in and out to students enrolled in trade or technical courses such as automotive, welding, and machine shop. E
    5. Maintains tool room and storeroom in a clean and orderly condition; returns tools and equipment to proper place in tool room. E
    6. Maintains records and files as assigned. E
    7. Instructs and oversees students in the proper and safe operation of equipment in the automotive and welding labs. E
    8. Operates a variety of instructional equipment and machines; maintains equipment and machines to ensure proper working condition. E
    9. Inspects and maintains tools and equipment; inspects equipment and tools for defects, damage, or other repair needs. E
    10. Performs minor maintenance and repairs to hand tools and equipment. E
    11. Sharpens planes, chisels, scrapers, hatchets, and other hand tools as needed. E
    12. Assists in ordering of equipment, parts, and supplies; prepares requisitions according to established procedures and policies. E
    13. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department's day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment.     Knowledge and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.

    • Uses and operations of tools and equipment, computer hardware, printers, standard computer software, applications, and specialized software applicable to the area of assignment.
    • Methods and procedures for troubleshooting and resolving tools, equipment, and computer problems incurred in a classroom or laboratory environment.
    • Sources of instructional support materials and aids to meet the needs of students and faculty in a laboratory.
    • Basic computer skills.
    • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
    • Nomenclature uses and maintenance of hand and light power tools and equipment.
    • Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
    • Methods, equipment, and materials used in trade or technical shops and courses.
    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
    • Basic record-keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing system methods and techniques.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
    Ability to:

    • Accurately, thoroughly, and clearly answer students' subject matter questions.
    • Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound independent judgement within areas of responsibility.
    • Provide day-to-day technical support for tools and equipment, computer hardware, peripherals, and software in assigned laboratories.
    • Guide students through the uses and operations of specialized tools and equipment.
    • Read and interpret manuals and other technical materials applicable to the area of assignment.
    • Analyze, interpret, explain, and apply relevant laws, regulations, ordinances, and policies.
    • Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports, documents, and instructional support materials.
    • Organize, update, and maintain a variety of records and files.
    • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
    • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
    • Issue tools and maintain records of use.
    • Operate, service, and make repairs on hand and light power tools and equipment.
    • Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Learn and apply appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
    • Learn and apply proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
    • Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet schedules and timelines.
    • Update and maintain routine records and files related to the area of assignment.
    • Work independently with little direction.
    • Utilize computer software programs, applications, and databases; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of assignment.
    • Communicate with students, staff, and the public in person and via a variety of communication modalities using various technology resources.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others encountered in the course of work.
    Education and Experience
    • High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED); AND
    • Six (6) months experience working with the tools and equipment utilized during classroom and laboratory instruction, OR
    • Sufficient training to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential responsibilities of the position;
    • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.
    Equivalencies

    Foreign Degrees

    Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

    License Certificates/Credentials
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
    • May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.
    Desired Qualifications
    • One (1) year of experience working with the tools and equipment utilized during classroom and laboratory instruction.
    Distinguishable Characteristics

    Incumbents in the Tool Room Attendant is the journey-level classification within the Tool Room Attendant series. The incumbent performs routine duties involving the care and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment in the tool room. Incumbents in the Senior Tool Room Attendant classification are assigned lead duties and perform various clerical duties.

    The Tool Room Attendant is distinguished from the Senior Tool Room Attendant in that the latter is the senior, lead-level classification within the Tool Room Attendant series. The incumbent performs non-standard, lead responsibilities to ensure Tool Room operations and in compliance with District/college policies and procedures. The incumbent is the lead classification and provides work direction and guidance to assigned staff.

    Physical Demands
    While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.

    Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; subject to lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing.

    Mental Demands
    While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

    Position Description

    This is a part-time, 25%, 11 month position. 10 hours per week. No health benefits. The days and hours of employment are nights and Saturdays. Days and hours of employment may change depending on District needs.
