JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to the following, performs other related duties as required.**Operates a bus along a predetermined route in a safe, timely, and courteous manner for the conveyance of passengers.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below.

An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is**:


Completion of secondary education or equivalent; must possess valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; must be a minimum of twenty-five (25) years of age; must have no more than two (2) points on driving record within past two (2) years; must have at least one (1) year of experience driving a manual transmission vehicle; must pass Department of Transportation physical examination.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
For purposes of 42USC 12101.**•Safely transports passengers along predetermined route, adhering to published schedules and practicing defensive driving techniques.


  • Operates vehicle in accordance with local, state, and federal traffic safety laws; operates vehicle safely with respect to road and traffic conditions.
  • Operates wheelchair lifts, wheelchair anchoring mechanisms, restraints, safety seats, safety belts, etc.; assists elderly and disabled passengers in boarding bus.
  • Completes daily pre and post trip inspections (e.g., checks fuel, oil, lights, first aid kit, emergency equipment, tires, brakes, etc.).
  • Reports immediately to mechanic any mechanical problems observed in motor, chassis, or body.
  • Reports any road or traffic conditions which may necessitate route changes, determines proper detour of bus route.
  • Complete daily log, including passenger count be category, meter readings, and hours worked.

  • Monitors passengers and enforces riding rules.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • May be responsible for depositing daily fares with bank.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
necessary to perform duties ( indicates developed after employment).

Knowledge of:

department policies and procedures*; safety practices and procedures; two-way radio operations; traffic laws governing transit operations; public relations; local geographical area; CDL laws and regulations; state and local traffic laws.


Skill in:
bus operation.


Ability to:

interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; complete routine forms; communicate effectively; recognize safety warnings; operate wheelchair restraints; operate wheelchair lift; deal effectively and courteously with the public; handle money and make change.

UNUSUAL, HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of:

  • Noisy operations or activities.
  • Flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Portable Fire Extinguishers.
  • Handling of material and supplies. (Includes mechanical handling equipment, the manner in which things are stored, and housekeeping.)

SAFE AND HEALTHFUL WORKPLACE


The employee:

  • Works in or around crowds.
  • Has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons.
  • Has exposure to life threatening situations.
  • Has exposure to hazardous driving conditions.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.


RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
Resident of Grant County, Indiana, or ability to obtain residency within six (6) months.
