Master's Thesis:
Application of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) for Calculating Airborne Sound Emissions from Electric Drives

While electric drives inherently have lower noise emissions compared to combustion engines, this does not always result in improved comfort due to the disruptive noise profile.

Therefore, reducing noise emissions remains a key aspect of development and must be considered early on.

This requires powerful simulation methods that allow for the representation of the entire acoustic chain:
excitation, transmission, and radiation.

This master's thesis will compare different methods for calculating airborne sound emissions from electric drive axles.

In particular, the boundary element method (BEM) will be compared to other established approaches (finite element method, equivalent radiated power, lumped parameter models) in terms of accuracy, computational effort, and usability.

The main tasks include:

  • Conducting a literature review on existing BEM approaches and their applicability for calculating airborne sound emissions from electric drives compared to other established methods
  • Applying a suitable BEM approach for basic acoustic radiators (monopole
