This is specialized and complex supervisory work in the operation of the Property and Evidence Unit within the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Work involves responsibility for the proper receipt, storage, security, computer inventory control, chain of custody, and final disposition of property and evidence items while in the custody and control of the department and knowledge of the laws and policies which govern items that may be used as evidence and/or disposed; significant contact with the public, other law enforcement and court related personnel; the ability to competently and independently manage a workload that may include competing demands and challenging deadlines; evaluating the value of evidentiary items; and limited operation of a motor vehicle used for pickup and delivery of property or evidence.

An employee in this classification must interact with employees, co-workers and the public using considerable tact and patience; and is expected to exercise a high degree of professional discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information or records.

Minimum Qualifications


Applicants must:


  • Have a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Be highly skilled in the use of a personal computer.
  • Have knowledge and previous experience in property and/or evidence control.
  • Be able to employ proper lifting techniques and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
  • Be able to competently communicate orally with the public, sometimes in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Be able to competently use and understand written communications.
  • Be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications


Preferred applicants:


  • Have at least one year of experience working in a warehousing and storage environment.
  • Have at least one year of experience in a law enforcement related field.
  • Have knowledge of the laws and policies which govern property and evidence, including weapons, valuables, drug paraphernalia, and other items.
