We are seeking a talented Engineering Technician to join our Intelligent Systems Division at NIST's Engineering Laboratory. Our team develops, advances, and deploys cutting-edge intelligent technologies that are essential to advance U.S. manufacturing performance.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical assistance in the preparation and operation of additive manufacturing machines, designing and fabricating research instruments and devices, and ensuring safe and productive operations in NIST's additive manufacturing laboratory spaces


If selected, you will:

  • Work collaboratively with engineering and scientific staff conducting worldclass manufacturing research.
  • Perform tasks related to the preparation, execution, and postprocessing of additive manufacturing components built as part of research projects.
  • Design and fabricate complex experimental apparatus and components using computeraided design and manufacturing software tools and machining processes.
  • Under supervisor guidance, conduct experimental testing based on objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Follow health, safety, and environment guidelines and procedures and carry out work in ways that improve the work environment's safety.

Basic Requirement

To qualify at the ZT-II Grade Level

:

To be qualified for this position, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent at the GS-08 grade level (ZT-II for NIST employees) in the Federal service.


Specialized experience is defined as experience in**:

1. Set up, operation, and maintenance of computer-numerical controlled (CNC), robotic, or other automated manufacturing equipment such as mill, lathe, electrical discharge machine (EDM), additive manufacturing system, robotic welding center, etc.

2. Design of mechanical components or assemblies utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. At least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting
