Description
Prepares surgical and autopsy specimen materials for clinical diagnosis.

Assists pathologist in making various examinations on submitted specimens including all phases of varied and complex histological procedures involving relatively advanced histological work.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
include the following.

Other duties may be assigned.- Maintains knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and medical terminology to appropriately perform job duties.- Identifies, prepares, and processes tissue specimens according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).- Processes tissues utilizing automated techniques according to departmental SOPs to include tissue processors, microtomy, stainers, and digital slide scanners.- Covers specialty areas beyond processing, embedding, and microtomy, such as Specials and/or Kidneys and/or IHC and/or Muscles if needed.- Prioritizes/reorganizes work to respond to workload and/or STAT requests.- Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions within the scope of the operations manual and records troubleshooting activities; Includes routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments as per manufacturer guidelines.- Conducts established quality control and performance improvement activities.- Provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.- Participates in Service Recovery and continuing education programs, as applicable.- Functions appropriately for on-call demands, if required.- Performs necessary barcoding functions.

Education/Experience:


Associate's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science; or equivalent education from an accredited institution and/or one year experience in processing/embedding/microtomy in a Histopathology laboratory; or two years in a clinical environment with data processing/specimen handling experience.

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Laboratory Information Systems
