    Nutrition Support Services (NSS) offers all CPS students breakfast, lunch, and, at select schools, after-school meals at no charge. Meals are offered every school day, during Saturday school programs, and during the summer. Meals comply with nutrition standards set forth in the USDA's Child Nutrition Program meal patterns.

    Job Summary:

    The Associate Lunchroom Manager manages the operations of the elementary school lunchroom in compliance with departmental guidelines and performs related duties as required.

    The Associate Lunchroom Manager will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supervising lunchroom personnel (Lunchroom Attendant, Porter, and Cook) and participating in the preparation of a variety of food items under acceptable practices established by Nutrition Support Services and the designated food services management company.
  • Monitor, supervise, and participate in the cleaning and sanitation of lunchroom facilities and equipment daily, monthly, and as needed; coaching and training new employees in specific duties, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicates daily lunchroom needs to staff and conducts regular staff meetings (minimum weekly), including food prep, sanitation, safety, and general housekeeping topics; forecasts production needs and places food orders based on menu needs and inventory levels; records and submits inventory level data within assigned deadlines.
  • Verifies that food items are received and stored at proper temperatures according to HACCP guidelines and prepared and maintained at proper temperatures with a minimal loss of nutritional value through the use of batch cooking and that recipes, production records, and nutrition guidelines are met, while HACCP guidelines are followed.
  • Monitors food preparation and current menus (approved by Nutrition Support Services) recipes, production records, and nutrition guidelines are met following HACCP guidelines.
  • Manages the receiving of inventory/products while reconciling invoices to ensure that deliveries are accurate.
  • Approves and submits requests for equipment repairs/replacements, small wares, and cleaning supplies.
  • Monitors the compliance of work and cleaning schedules for employees.
  • Documents disciplinary issues in a timely fashion.
  • Attends required/scheduled meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Completes paperwork including but not limited to deposit slips, production records, cooks temperature logs, line temperature logs, refrigeration/freezer temperature logs, food delivery records, and miscellaneous reports.
  • Counts and secures money collected from the sale of food items. Prepares bank deposit slips, follows cash handling policies and procedures; and operates POS terminals and the Mosaic system.
  • Serves food and cleans the lunchroom including sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming the kitchen, serving areas, and locker room as needed.
  • Assisting in piloting and implementation of new programs within Nutrition Support Services.
  • Completes all USDA-mandated training hours in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Nutrition Support Services/designated food management company.
  • In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Porter must possess the following qualifications:

    Education Required:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent with at least one year of proven supervisory/food preparation experience in an institutional setting or an Associate Lunchroom Manager III equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Chicago Department of Public Health Certified Food Service Manager Certificate.
  • Experience Required:

  • At least one year of proven supervisory/food preparation experience in an institutional setting or an Associate Lunchroom Manager III equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Other Requirements:

  • Required to lift or exert a force of 25-40 lbs. frequently and lbs. occasionally. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, crouch, climb, bend, reach, handle and finger objects.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of HACCP methods used in preparing a variety of foods in large quantities, basic sanitation principles and practices, and meal accountability.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of others.
  • Must have the ability to work in a school setting and demonstrate a caring attitude towards students.
  • Must be able to serve the students in a polite and professional manner and possess proficient oral and communication skills to interact with staff, students, faculty, administrators, and supervisors.
  • Must have basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and use fractions.
  • Must be able to consistently move things around safely and efficiently.
  • Must be able to taste and smell in order to identify flavors and odors and exercise frequent use of near visual acuity with the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to work in environments with some temperature extremes.
  • Conditions of Employment

    As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.
