Thurmont, MD - The Max Planck Institute for Human Development's Center for Humans & Machines is seeking motivated Student Assistants for three possible roles: AI Behaviourist, Machine Learning Specialist, or Experimental Interface Developer.


The Center for Humans & Machines conducts interdisciplinary research to understand, anticipate, and shape major disruptions caused by digital media and Artificial Intelligence in areas such as thinking, learning, working, playing, cooperating, and governing.

Our goal is to gain insight into how machines are currently shaping human society and how they may continue to do so in the future.

Our team consists of a diverse group of international scholars and a science support team.


We are looking for a motivated Student Research Assistant who is comfortable working at the intersection of computer science and social sciences.

We have three distinct profiles available for this position:


  • Profile 'Machine Learning Specialist': Train, finetune, evaluate, and integrate generative machine learning models for studying humanAI interaction. The ideal candidate has experience with deep learning libraries such as PyTorch and Hugging Face, and a solid understanding of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques.
  • Profile 'Experimental Interface Developer': Design, develop, deploy, and maintain webbased experimental interfaces for studying humanAI interaction using a FastAPI, React, and MongoDB stack. The ideal candidate has experience with web development (HTML, JavaScript) and API design (RESTful).
