Overview:
Activity Specialists will be responsible for facilitating and leading various activities in STEM, arts, and physical recreation. Specialists will be asked to develop and execute lesson plans in their respective specialized enrichment activity. They are also expected to ensure a safe recreational environment for our scholars by exercising classroom management principles.

Specialists will work closely with their group leaders, counselors, and Program Director to connect after school learning opportunities to the real world by way of trips, take home projects and other activities.

Specialists are expected to align with the school day culture of discipline and community by upholding school day rules and regulations as well as adhering to any staff regulations.

Activity Specialists must be available to work 3:30 to 6:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and 12:30 to 4:00 pm on Fridays.

Responsibilities:


Activity Specialists will be responsible for developing lesson plans and executing their specialized enrichment (STEM, arts, physical recreation, youth development) activity.

Additionally Specialists will

  • Serve as a role model/mentor to our students
  • Create and present a product list of any consumable supplies or equipment necessary for their activity
  • Maintain a safe, orderly and joyful environment that supports strong program outcomes
  • Set up and break down any equipment used during your activity and maintain a clean and orderly workspace
  • Work collaboratively with the counselors, group leaders, program director, Ascend academic team members, external agencies, community partners, and others to achieve activity and program goals
  • Help monitor student participation, skill development and program quality through a student information system

Staff and reporting relationships
Activity Specialists report to the Program Director and Program Manager


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, with some college preferred; current college and graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply
  • At least 2 years of professional experience leading respected enrichment activity
  • Experience working with middle school aged population is preferred
  • Expertise or experience planning activities in the areas of arts, STEM, or physical recreation is preferred
  • Strong leadership and team building skills
  • Strong group management skills
  • Insistence on behavioral and academic excellence and rigor at all times
  • Excellent interpersonal and problemsolving skills
  • Strong professional relationships, ability to function in a team of people with diverse backgrounds and skills
  • A hunger for feedback and an openness to engage in a process of selfimprovement

Compensation
$40-70 an hour approx 12-15 hours weekly
