Reporting to the Associate Director for Academic Services in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, the Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting student retention and graduation university-wide, supports and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies.

Essential Duties

  • Provides individual and group academic advising services to students and connects with various resources to help promote success toward graduation, career, and personal goals
  • Utilizes various technological tools to monitor and track student success (Peoplesoft, DARS, eAdvisor, Achieve, Analytics, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Provides support to students accessing the department as a service unit and responds to questions regarding courses, math placement and articulation, and course overrides.
  • Acts as a departmental representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications
Master's degree AND two (2) years or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education


Working Environment

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.

Department Statement

  • The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at ASU is currently home to about 60 tenured or tenuretrack faculty members, 60 instructional faculty, 10 postdoctoral associates, 190 graduate students, 1,500 undergraduate student majors, and 20 staff members. The School teaches courses to over 20,000 undergraduate students each academic year. SoMSS recently started a new undergraduate degree program in data science. The School also offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education, as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. SoMSS has a strong interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering.
