Essential Duties

  • Work collaboratively (as a team member) with the Chair, Associate Chairs, and departmental staff to assist with both the regular functioning of the department and with special projects that arise.
  • Implement and manage personnel processes, such as annual faculty reviews and promotion and tenure cases, working collaboratively with the college's personnel team and Dean's assistants.
  • Collect and report data on departmental operations and store data on shared drives for the purposes of recordkeeping.
  • Communicate accurately and effectively with English Department faculty, students, employees of other departments, university administrators, and the public as needed.
  • Manage Chair's calendar
  • Schedule and plan logistics for meetings and departmental events (which may entail scheduling rooms, arranging catering, sending invitations, generating award certificates, managing RSVPs, etc.)
  • Compile agendas and take minutes at meetings as necessary
  • Initiate, develop and sustain strong positive relationships with staff and faculty to further the mission and goals of the department and college.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, professional development seminars and other related meetings.
  • Keep up to date on computer software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in a related field AND four (4) years experience in an administrative position; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to learn computer software, such as Dropbox, that the university may stipulate the use of.

  • Experience in dealing with a wide range of topics, including confidential and sensitive information requiring diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Experience maintaining effective working relationships in a diversified population.
  • Experience analyzing and comprehending complex issues.

  • Experience supporting a senior level executive.
  • Experience in work that requires organizational skills, including the ability to function at a high level in a multitasking environment with attention to detail while under deadlines.

Working Environment

  • Frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work (25%).
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Depending on the unit/program needs, some evenings and occasional weekends may be required.
  • This position receives regular review of objectives.

This position is eligible for flexible work arrangements after 90 days of employment with proper approval.
