Description

Duties:

Primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the Bureau's i-Connect platform (network and systems).


Plans, organizes, and implements highly complex and state-of-the-art local area network and wide area networks (LAN/WANS) for the inmate education networks.


Serves as a technical expert in enterprise level servers, virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) desktops, personal computer (PC) hardware, wide area and local area networks (WAN/LANS)-whether on-premises or in the cloud - commercial personal computer software; custom PC programming; and telecommunications.


Provides advanced hardware and software analysis, evaluation and recommendations to Central Office, regional offices, and institution Education and IT staff with regards to associated equipment to include system planning at various locations.


Develops and administers applicable equipment and software standards, policy, specification, and guides to ensure that applicable Bureau computer hardware, telecommunications equipment, and LAN/WAN technology is compatible, efficient, cost-effective, and most importantly, secure.

Basic Requirements:


Education:

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level.


OR

Experience:

You must have IT related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

AND

Specialized Experience:

You must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower GS-grade (or equivalent).

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT.


Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience in designing and/or implementing complex security and system software or hardware for personal computers on a wide area network or a large-scale mainframe system.
  • Experience developing plans, programs or training to enhance employee performance or career development.
  • Experience designing, installing, configuring and maintaining a complex arrangement of network computer resources.
  • Experience serving as a computer contact and resource person for others internal and external to the organization on critical/technical issues.
  • Performs benchmark tests of proposed new equipment. Advises upper management of newly developed costeffective alternatives to present telecommunications and networking equipment.
If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.

To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.
