The CalSTRS Enterprise Strategy Management Division is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Research Data Specialist I on the Continuous Improvement Team.


  • The Enterprise Strategy Management Division drives strategic planning, organizational performance, enterprise sustainability, continuous improvement, research, and innovation at CalSTRS. The business areas in the division work together to increase CalSTRS' ability to integrate business intelligence into organizational planning and performance. The work of the division informs the Teachers' Retirement Board and the CalSTRS executive staff to arrive at sound decisions in pursuit of CalSTRS' strategic goals.
  • The Continuous Improvement Team is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and executing all activities related to the development, maintenance, implementation and executions of business process improvement and business process re engineering. CIT works to foster organizational awareness; bridge crossfunctional process improvement; improve efficiency and effectiveness in work processes; support risk analysis and risk mitigation; and formalize and document processes.   • Under the general direction of the Research Data Manager, the Research Data Specialist I independently develops and utilizes research methodology and techniques in areas where precedents are lacking. The incumbent is responsible for a wide range of research and analytical duties regarding complex projects related to Business Process Improvement (BPI) and Business Process Reengineering (BPR) activities for CalSTRS in addition to supporting the innovation program, as needed.
Experience leading projects with multi-disciplinary team members and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Experience with research, analysis, and identifying patterns from historical data.
  • Ability to develop, track, evaluate, and perform statistical analysis on performance measurement metrics.
  • Knowledge of Business Process Improvement (BPI) or Business Process Reengineering (BPR) work efforts.
  • Knowledge of change management strategies, Lean Six Sigma for operational excellence and organizational performance management.
  • Experience leading and facilitating BPIrelated activities, including mapping sessions, workshops or focus groups.
  • Ability to identify and advise on operational improvement opportunities thru established methodologies.
  • Experience communicating and presenting information to a variety of audiences, including directors and executives.

Telework Information:

We offer a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions with staff working on-site at
our Headquarters in West Sacramento 2-3
days per week.**Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
