Description

A circulator nurse is a registered nurse whose primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient throughout a surgical procedure.

These nurses are also known as circulating nurses or perioperative nurses, and they play a pivotal role in the operating room (OR).

While they don't directly participate in the surgery, their support is essential to maintain a sterile environment and facilitate a successful operation.

Job responsibilities of a Circulator Nurse:

They oversee the inventory of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the procedure. Circulating nurses ensure that everything is readily available and in good condition.

  • Documentation: Accurate documentation is essential for patient records and legal purposes. Circulator nurses document the surgical process, the team involved, and any complications that may arise.
  • Communication: Effective communication is key in the operating room. Circulator nurses liaise between the surgical team, the patient, and the patient's family, keeping everyone informed about the surgery's progress.
  • Patient Safety: Ensuring the patient's safety during the procedure is their top priority. These nurses monitor vital signs, confirm the surgical site, and address any concerns promptly.
