Nursing Unit Secretary Job Summary:


The Nursing Unit Secretary performs clerical duties according to the job description that contributes to the operation of the unit.

Time frame may be revised with mutual agreement of unit administrator's specific specialty areas.


Nursing Unit Secretary Key Accountabilities:


  • Acts as Nursing Unit Receptionist assisting patients, visitors, and hospital staff as appropriate.
  • Answers telephones in a courteous manner identifying self and unit according to unit policy.
  • Keeps designated nurse i.e. primary nurse, case manager informed about admission/discharges and patient related problems.
  • Uses direction in handling confidential information.
  • Informs other departments of patient activity according to policy, e.g., Bed Control.
  • Keeps daily census systems up to date at least once shift e.g. census board and daily patient census sheets.
  • Maintains medical records according to hospital policy.
  • Provides clerical support and transcribes physician's orders.
  • Arranges for patient transportation according to Hospital policy.

Work Schedule:
PT, 24 hrs/wk, wknd work required

Nursing Unit Secretary Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 year experience as an NSU or in a healthcare setting, preferred.
  • Analytical skills to gather and interpret data in situations in which the information or problems are relatively routine.
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to learn EPIC and other computerbased systems.
  • Ability to understand and respond to simple written or verbal instructions. Incumbents must respond appropriately to instructions, questions, or requests for information.
  • Customer service skills
