    Overview

    The Office of the Dean of the Graduate School at Princeton University seeks an Assistant Dean for Access, Diversity, and Inclusion with a focus on Natural Sciences and Engineering graduate students. This professional will report to the Associate Dean for Access, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Graduate School, with the primary responsibility of planning, implementing, and assessing the Graduate SchoolâTMs goals related to access, diversity, and inclusion in the areas of recruitment, admissions, and retention for underrepresented students (e.g., students of color, women in STEM, low income and first-generation students, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, veterans and others).

    In addition, the Assistant Dean will partner with multiple constituencies within the Graduate School, the University, and beyond to foster an inclusive environment of belonging for all graduate students. This professional will join an office that offers a challenging and supportive work environment in which the work itself is gratifying, multi-faceted, constantly evolving, and meaningful.

    Responsibilities

    Recruitment

    The Assistant Dean actively recruits on behalf of the Graduate SchoolâTMs programs at local, state, and national venues. This position leads ADIâTMs recruitment initiatives with HBCUs, HSIs, and MSIs. This position will host prospective students, organize recruiting efforts, foster relationships with minority serving and public institutions, and represent academic departments at recruiting activities off-campus. Tracking and reporting recruitment data will be required for assessment purposes.

    Admissions

    As part of the graduate admissions process, this individual will help to identify promising candidates and collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs in the Humanities and Social Sciences along with academic departments to diversify the departmentâTMs application pools, compose admissions reports for departments, as well as serve as a resource and advocate for diversity. Tracking and reporting admissions data will be required for assessment purposes.

    Retention

    This individual will collaborate with the Assistant Dean in Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Grad Futures to provide students with information about navigating the University culture and professional development opportunities. The Assistant Dean for ADI will also closely monitor the progress of students, and proactively aid students during key academic milestones. This individual will facilitate the resolution of concerns with the directors of graduate studies and advisers. The Assistant Dean will work within the Graduate School and with departments/programs to develop and create programming, workshops, trainings, and other opportunities related to diversity and pipeline/pathway issues. They will serve as a resource and collaborative partner for faculty and academic departments and programs, as well as an advisor for affinity groups, implement diversity and inclusion programming at orientation and throughout the year, and develop and assess interventions to improve self-efficacy. Overall, the Assistant Dean will create and oversee initiatives to enhance diversity and inclusive excellence in the graduate intellectual community. Tracking and reporting retention data will be required for assessment purposes.

    Additional responsibilities:

    Assist departments and programs in the Natural Sciences and Engineering with issues related to increasing the diversity of their applicant pools, their admissions and recruitment efforts, and their support of studentsâTM academic and professional success

    Lead and provide management support for ADI signature programs including but not limited to the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Initiative, the Graduate Scholars Program (GSP), the Princeton Prospective PhD Preview (P3), the Diversity Fellows Program, the Inclusive Academy Symposium and the Best of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion (BADI) Awards.

    Lead and provide management support for ADIâTMs recruitment initiatives with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and other programs and institutions.

    Collect, track, analyze, and present data as they relate to diversity initiatives, provide feedback to faculty, staff and students on the effectiveness of the SchoolâTMs access, diversity, and inclusion efforts and suggestions for continued improvement.

    Monitor national trends, peer institution efforts, and seek benchmarks for successful diversity initiatives.

    Develop, implement and maintain methodologies to assess efforts within the Graduate School and its departments/programs with regards to access, diversity, and inclusion.

    Serve as an adviser and mentor to graduate students.

    Support the diversity and inclusion teamâTMs communication strategies (e.g. newsletter publications, webinar creation, website content creation, and social media).

    Qualifications

    Essential requirements

    • Advanced degree is required
    • Documented experience working with underrepresented students in higher education
    • In-depth understanding and knowledge of the culture and issues of access, diversity, inclusion, equity, and multiculturalism in a higher education setting
    • Strong administrative abilities, and excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competencies in order to interact with a wide range of individuals, from undergraduate summer students to senior faculty and administrators, both inside and outside the University
    • Strong communication (oral and written) skills and should be proficient at public speaking
    • Ability to work independently on concurrent projects under pressure of multiple deadlines
    • Occasional travel and work on evenings and weekends work is required

    Preferred requirements

    • 4-6 years of work experience in higher education; teaching and mentoring experience in a research-intensive environment is strongly desired
    • PhD in subject area(s) is preferred
