Function / Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the building Principal is to provide instructional leadership and organizational management/supervision to support the educational development of each student in alignment with national, state, and local educational standards, goals and requirements.

In addition, the Middle School Principal, as the instructional leader, is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and/or facilitating targeted staff professional development related to the curricular components necessary to support the academic and instructional continuous improvement goals of both the school and district.

The Principal must keep informed and up to date regarding new developments in curriculum, instruction and administration, i.e. professional development/academies, workshops, meetings, grade level instruction, etc.

It is critical that the Principal develop and maintain effective relationships with all stakeholders, including regular communication with parents, parent groups, and the community.

Inherent in this complex professional leadership role are responsibilities for staff evaluation, curriculum development, personnel management, emergency procedures, and facility operations.

Furthermore, the building Principal sets the tone for an effective culture and climate centered on ensuring access to rigorous grade-level core instruction for all with values and dispositions that include, but are not limited to: equity-minded, growth-oriented, results-oriented, solutions-oriented, systems focused, collaborative, innovative and ethical.


Job Duties / Responsibilities:


  • LEADERSHIP
  • CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION:
  • Projects and inspires a positive, cooperative educational environment within the school that motivates and provides direction for all staff toward the fulfillment of the school's mission statement.
  • Is responsible for the oversight of programs and the ongoing improvement of instruction within the school that is developmentally, culturally, and linguistically relevant. Ensures that curriculum improvement, instructional programs, and all courses, including the use of Board adopted resources, are implemented with fidelity
- according to the curriculum adoption process of the Instructional Council and in alignment with State standards.

  • Develops and implements inservice activities for the staff.
  • Ensures district supported common assessments are administered and properly entered into the student system.
  • ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANIZATION:
  • Maintains both formal and informal lines of communication to all staff while involving them meaningfully in the operation of the school.
  • Directs the planning for all aspects of instruction, including scheduling, registration of students, and the development of a building schedule.
  • Meets with parents and/or parent groups regarding the goals, objectives, and programs of the school.
  • Works collaboratively with committees (including Collective Bargaining groups) to ensure a teacher/staff voice in processes.
  • FINANCIAL AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:
  • Responsible for all expenditures related to the approved budget of the school.
  • Works with Plant Operations Management to evaluate the general condition and needs of the building and provide written recommendations/updates to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools and/or Executive Director.
  • STUDENT SAFETY AND CULTURE:
  • Establishes rules and processes related to student behavior and discipline in agreement with the district's philosophy and policies.
  • Enforces rules consistent with the Board adopted Student Code of Conduct. Is responsible for the security and pupil safety within the building; follows procedures written by the office of School Safety and Culture and Climate to protect and enhance safety of students and staff, and to better ensure the security of property and equipment.
  • Coordinates and supervises the related service personnel and the District Multitiered System of Supports Office to ensure an effective social and emotional networking program.
  • Promotes an overall general health, safety, and welfare environment for the student body; guiding, supervising and/or coordinating all student activities to include those school related activities outside of regular school hours, i.e. after school enrichments, field trips/experiential learning experiences, clubs, etc.
  • TEACHER PERSONNEL:
  • Maintains a positive ongoing program of teacher supervision and communication, combined with meaningful feedback and evaluation
