The Catholic Campus Minister at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - with the support and under the direction of the Director of Catholic Ministry at MIT - serves as a key spiritual leader and pastoral presence within the campus community, promoting a dynamic Catholic life and ministry at MIT.

This role involves fostering a vibrant Catholic community, providing pastoral care, coordinating liturgical celebrations., and supporting the faith development of students.

The Campus Minister seeks to enrich the spiritual life of students and forms a strong collaborative team with the Director of Catholic Ministry, and pastoral staff.


Responsibilities Include:


  • Pastoral Care and Spiritual Guidance:
  • Offer compassionate pastoral support and spiritual care to students (undergraduate and graduate) and post docs.
  • Provide opportunities for individual spiritual guidance.
  • Assist students in exploring their faith, discerning their vocation, and deepening their spiritual life.
  • Liturgical and Sacramental ministry:
  • Coordinate Catholic Masses, prayer services, and sacramental rites on campus.
  • Occasionally preside at appropriate liturgies.
  • Engage students in liturgical ministries and provide training for lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers, and liturgical formation for music ministers.
  • Faith Formation and Education:
  • Develop and implement faith formation programs, spiritual retreats, and smallgroup studies.
  • Facilitate theological discussions, Scripture studies, and reflections on Catholic life and spirituality.
  • Be supportive of faculty, staff, students, and post docs who seek to integrate faith and reason in intellectual inquiry.
  • Community Building and Outreach:
  • Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive Catholic community on campus, embracing diversity and inclusion.
  • With student leaders, organize social events, service opportunities, and educational lectures (particularly addressing contemporary challenges facing young adults).
  • Assist with community building socials and engage with students.
  • Reach out to marginalized or disconnected students to ensure their inclusion in Catholic activities.
  • Collaborate with student leaders and campus partners to promote solidarity with the marginalized.
  • Create highly effective publicity media for all MIT Catholic life and ministry events.
  • Leadership Development:
  • Mentor and empower student leaders within the Catholic community, fostering their spiritual growth and leadership skills.
  • Organize and provide leadership training, spiritual retreats, and formation programs.
  • Encourage students to engage in advocacy, service, and activism inspired by Catholic social teaching.
  • Collaboration and Networking:
  • Build positive relationships with university administrators, faculty, staff, and student organizations.
  • Collaborate with Catholic campus ministry colleagues on other campuses.

Qualifications:


  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Master's degree in theology, pastoral ministry, religious studies, or a related field.
  • Excellent computer skills (Pages, Excel, Canva, etcetera).
  • Previous experience in campus ministry or similar context.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Catholic theology, liturgical practices, and Ignatian spirituality (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Commitment to personal and professional growth in Catholic faith and ministry.
  • Flexibility to work Sundays, some evenings, and occasionally travel as needed.
  • Pass background check.
  • Completion of Protecting God's Children program (or equivalent)
  • Campus Minister: Fulltime, Salary Competitive and commensurate with experience, Health Insurance (including Dental) and other benefits per the Archdiocese of Boston benefit package, including annual retreat time.

Campus Minister:

Reports to the Director of Catholic Ministry at MIT.
