Description
Orthotics and Prosthetic residents, are specifically educated and trained to manage comprehensive orthotic and prosthetic patient care.

Their duties include assessing patients, formulating treatment plans, designing and fabricating orthopedic and prosthetic devices based on patient needs and physician prescriptions, and conducting follow-up sessions.

Orthotic and prosthetics residents support patients in device usage instructions and device repair and maintenance under the supervision of a Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist.

This residency is an NCOPE accredited residency program. It is a 12-month supervised program in Orthotics in a comprehensive orthotic and/or prosthetic accredited facility.

The NCOPE accredited residency program allows you to acquire practical clinical training in orthotics and/or prosthetics which is part of the overall education required for ABC Orthotist and/or Prosthetist Certification.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assess the patient's functional status, including muscle development, gait, and sensory function, range of motion, joint stability, and skin integrity.

Develop a plan that addresses the patient's needs and goals, including pain reduction, comfort, stability, mobility, as well as aesthetics.

Select the appropriate design, materials, and components for optimum strength, durability, and function.
Discuss the treatment plan, including benefits, risks, and time involved.
Prepare the patient for the device, with the use of splints or compression garments, as needed.
Take measurements, make impressions, and develop templates as needed to accurately fit the device.
Fabricate or assemble the device, and assess and properly align for maximum function and comfort.
Provide complete and accurate direction and guidance to technicians responsible for fabrication of orthoses and prosthesis for patients.
Instruct and explain to patients how to use and maintain the devices.
Provide ongoing care, including evaluation and modification of the device for optimal fit and function.
Be on a On call rotation in the inpatient settings
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

Bachelor's Degree OR Master's in Orthotics and Prosthetics by a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) educational site.

Board-eligible or board-certified by The American Board for Certification in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics (ABC). Certification must be in good standing.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
This job is in a fast-paced setting with equal division between patient care, technical work and computers.

Patient care tasks will include; frequent bending, lifting, twisting, to include moving the patient on and off an exam table to measure and fit devices as well as shifting the patient on the exam table.

In addition to, helping patients with activities of daily living (ADL's).
