    Job Summary


    Reporting to the Director of Campus Safety, this position is responsible for management of all aspects of safety and security at Occidental College.

    Safety and Security operations include responding to criminal, emergency medical, hazardous, and potentially violent incidents.

    Works in collaboration with the Campus Deans and Directors and other administrative staff to ensure that situations are appropriately addressed and expectations of security and personal safety are achieved.

    Duties include planning, supervising, and coordinating security operations on a 24-hour basis; investigating and reporting on all security issues to the Director of Campus Safety; leading and participating in the provision of security services such as supervising, monitoring, training and assessing the performance of campus safety staff.

    Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over 12-14 staff employees.

    Job Duties


    50% - Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and management of campus safety and security programs and services including, but not limited to security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, parking management, and student staff management.

    Actively participates in all administrative meetings relating to campus emergencies and/or crises. Attends internal/ external training courses, classes, and seminars to enhance protective services skills and knowledge. Provides training for faculty, students and staff on security related issues.

    Provides 24-hour administrative on - call coverage of all serious incidents and activities that occur within the college, to promptly notify the Director and Dean of Students in accordance with call-in directives.

    10% - In coordination with the Director, the Assistant Director interacts with outside vendors to coordinate the installation, operation, and maintenance, repair of safety alarm systems, access control systems, and emergency equipment.

    Oversees vendors for compliance with contractual services. - (Essential)
    25% - Prepares shift schedules, approves leave and overtime use. Assists with the budget and spending management for the Campus Safety department. Prepares and posts the approved duty roster each week, which includes special events and assignments as appropriate. Ensures that all incident reports and operations reports are properly documented.

    Member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Campus Safety Advisory Committee, Occidental Behavioral Intervention Team (OBIT), Campus Event Advisory Committee (CEAC).

    Attend and/or leads other committees on behalf of the Director of Campus Safety, as needed. - (Essential)

    15% - Oversees supervision of the operations function of the Department of Campus Safety on a day-to-day basis and for assigned shifts.

    Works one tour of each shift quarterly, to review problems and issues, inspect officers' appearance, and answer specific questions or concerns.

    Recommends and participates in the immediate and future training of officers in accordance with policy. Evaluates and documents employee performance and provides feedback and mentorship along with the Director of Campus Safety. Ensures the staff complies with all College and department policies and procedures. Participates in the selection process of new employees. Maintain a good working relationship with external law enforcement officials and other related agencies to obtain and exchange information. - (Essential)

    Minimum Qualifications


    Bachelor's degree in environmental safety management, Security Management, Public Safety, Communications, or other related fields of study related to position responsibilities.

    Certified in first aid, CPR and AED.
    Must possess and maintain a current valid California driver's license.
    Ten years of progressively responsible security or public safety experience and/or equivalent a combination of education and experience. Three years of supervisory experience and the knowledge and ability to train and motivate staff.

    Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.

    Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.

    Strong commitment to a quality work product.
    Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically. Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
    Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.

    Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.

    Ability to analyze, synthesize and organize data, and present findings in a comprehensible manner for different audiences.

    Effective organizational, logistical, time management and planning skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, prioritize and fulfill the functions of an office in a timely manner.

    Ability to self-motivate and work independently.

    Ability to provide effective leadership and training, and to work effectively and professionally across functions, disciplines, levels, and with diverse groups.

    Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.

    Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates' experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.

    Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.

    Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals. Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed. Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.


    EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:
    $70,000 - $75,000/yr


    If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location.

    In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer.

    Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role.

    Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
