The Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team for the development of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) in Arizona.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating emergency response efforts related to human and animal food incidents.

The RRT Coordinator would be responsible for meeting federal grant requirements, goals, objectives, training and grant reporting to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the development of a Rapid Response Team, with a focus on the development of proactive measures and swift responses to emergencies statewide striving to protect public health and maintain the nationally integrated food safety systems.

The position will work very closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) for the grant in order to complete all efforts regarding human and animal food events, incidents, outbreaks and recalls.

The position will assist in the implementation of the Rapid Response Team.

It will be important for the coordinator to make connections with all relevant parties in a human and animal food emergency.

It is important for the personnel to understand what an emergency related to human and animal food response would be.

The individual will collaborate with these departments/individuals to schedule meetings and relevant trainings throughout the year.


The position is responsible for fulfilling and reporting on the objectives outlined in the development of a Rapid Response Team grant.

This includes the efforts to communicate with all necessary agencies in order to prepare and respond to any incident that could occur in Arizona related to a human or an animal food emergency.

This position will ensure that the AZDA provides the necessary training in order to conduct these tasks associated with emergency response.


This position would require you to drive a state vehicle on state business and the ability to pass a federal and financial background check.


This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.


Job Duties:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement rapid response strategies and protocols for human and animal food emergencies.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, government agencies, industry partners, and other stakeholders to ensure a collaborative and effective response.
  • Create and conduct training exercises.
  • Direct and coordinate with the Arizona RRT during human and animal food emergencies, including mobilizing resources and providing guidance and support.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for communication and coordination with external partners and coordinate media response with agency PIO during food safety incidents.
  • Conduct post-incident debriefs and evaluations to identify lessons learned and areas for improvement in emergency response procedures.
  • Stay informed about emerging threats and trends in food safety, continuous communication with members of the AZ RRT and relevant entities.
  • Coordinate ongoing training and education to RRT members, ensuring they are proficient in rapid response procedures.
  • Coordinate with the agency Emergency Response Team to develop and update procedures for RRT activations, outlining procedures for responding to various human and animal food emergencies.
  • During RRT activations, will provide leadership and direction to team members, facilitating effective communication and decision-making.
  • Lead ongoing quality initiatives, analyzing RRT activations/exercises to identify areas for improvement and implementing changes to enhance the team's performance.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of RRT activities, including during activation, exercises, RRT assessments, conference presentations and/or poster and grant reporting.
  • Flexibility to travel and work outside of regular business hours as needed.

Skills in:
Federal grant management, financial analysis; budget/revenue projection and forecasting, delegation, facilitation, interpersonal relations and multitasking.

Must have concise and effective oral and written communication skills and be an experienced user of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite, with advanced spreadsheet and database skills.
