Ongoing Recruitment for Part-Time and Temporary Applicant Pool

  • This is
    parttime, public safety work in the control of the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at areas designated as school crossings to ensure safety of student pedestrians in crossing the street. Work includes standing, walking, lifting traffic cones and using the arms to raise and lower handheld traffic control signs at vehicular intersections, in all types of weather conditions. Formal training and uniforms are provided, and shifts are scheduled when public schools are in session. Although employees of this class do not have authority to write traffic tickets to violators, they report violations to an administrative supervisor. Due to the critical lifesafety responsibilities of this position, employees in this class must be prepared to work uninterrupted for approximately one (1) hour and fifteen (15) minutes per shift (one shift in the morning and one in the afternoon) for a total of two (2) hours and thirty (30) minutes per day. This position is filled on an asneeded basis.

Salary:
$20.13 Hourly, (180 school days per year)

Minimum Qualifications


Applicants must:


  • Be able to conduct clear, understandable verbal communication, in English, with pedestrians and motorists.
  • Be able to establish and maintain an effective, professional working relationships with the public.
  • Be able to learn rules and regulations and to conduct firm and tactful enforcement of these rules and regulations in a clear and concise manner.
  • Be able to physically perform essential job functions without interruption for up to two hours.
  • Be punctual, regular in attendance and competently perform with mínimal supervision.
  • Be able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Be able to work a parttime, split shift.
  • Be able to work outdoors, including inclement weather.
  • Have an acceptable background to work in public safety as a civilian Police Department employee.

Desirable Qualifications

Preferred applicants:


  • Have prior experience working with the public, particularly children.
  • Have some experience explaining and enforcing rules.
