    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The Semel Institute is seeking to hire a full time Staff Research Associate I to assist the project team in their aims to expand and improve the delivery of substance use disorder treatment.

    In this role you may also support the project team evaluating California's Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System Waiver, which is a State funded contract with the objective of evaluating the impact of a major overhaul to the state's substance use disorder treatment system.

    The projects involve both quantitative and qualitative data methods.


    Specific tasks include:

    • Conduct literature reviews and generate summaries of literature searches.
    • Assist with the design and provide feedback on data capture tools.
    • Assist in scheduling and transcribing key informant interviews and other required research/evaluation support activities.
    • Assist in the development and management of web-based surveys (e.g., on Qualtrics or Survey Monkey).
    • Assist with data entry of surveys and interviews and maintaining files related to data entry.
    • Code open-ended questions using previously developed codes.
    • Assist in identifying and correcting data errors.
    • Assist with compiling information from monthly/quarterly data collection into meeting agendas for ongoing discussion toward reporting.
    • Assist with supervision/guidance in basic data analysis using SPSS or other statistical software.
    • Prepare tables, figures, PowerPoint presentations, etc.


    Knowledge of California's substance use disorder treatment system and ability to work with program administrators in the field is highly desirable.


    Pay Range:
    $ $30.71 hourly.

    • Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
    • Knowledge of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment (e.g. experience as an SUD client, counselor, researcher, etc.) and ability to work with program administrators in the field is preferred.
    • Willingness and ability to maintain confidentiality of evaluation participants interviewed is required.
    • Organizational skills with strong attention to detail is required to maintain records and coordinate other tasks.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of personal computers and relevant software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and is required.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing, with participants, staff, and supervisors is required.
    • Ability to work with busy providers to complete evaluation tasks is required.
    • Ability to question participants about sensitive behavioral issues, including drug use and criminal behavior, and frequency of high-risk sex behaviors is required.
    • Experience in data collection with similar populations is required.
    • Familiarity with and Filemaker Pro is preferred.
    • Familiarity with Qualtrics or Survey Monkey, or similar survey platform is required.
    • Ability to conduct statistical analysis is strongly preferred.
    • Familiarity with UCLA reimbursement and travel procedures is preferred.
    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends is required.
    • Ability to travel (able to fly, rent and drive a car, stay overnight when needed) is required.
    • When University COVID-19 guidance allow, reporting to work to our Santa Monica Blvd office and following safety procedures (which may include but are not limited to wearing a mask, social distancing, and temperature checks) are required.
