Nature & Purpose of Position

  • The primary role of the Peer Tutor is to support Educational Affair's mission to support student learning in the classroom by providing tutorial services for firstyear SHSU-COM students requirements. This position requires the employee to have excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt his or her teaching methods to meet the needs of the student, as well as have a desire to see students succeed. The Peer Tutor may be required to implement instructional activities in both individual and group tutorial sessions. Specific responsibilities are listed below.
  • Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
  • Coordinating meetings and schedules with tutees as appropriate
  • Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, notetaking skills, and approaches to answering test questions
  • Providing students positive and constructive feedback
  • Participating in an initial training program for developing teaching techniques and learning skills and participating in ongoing training sessions as required by both MSA and HR
  • Monitoring students' attendance and progress
  • Attending staff meetings
  • Completing data entry tasks using required database software (Campus Connect)
  • Documenting and communicating student progress, especially
  • If additional difficulties are encountered in the tutoring sessions or
  • If tutor suspects student requires additional university resources

Other Requirements for the Position

  • SHSU-COM OMS2 Student Doctor in good academic standing
  • Ability to work with mínimal supervision
  • Approval of course director/phase I lead required; additional academic performance data may be reviewed to determine eligibility
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
