Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidate must have a PhD or equivalent in either Ceramic Science and Engineering or Material Science and Engineering. Candidate must have at least 5 years of post graduate school experience in this area. Knowledge of high temperature materials such as zirconium, hafnium and titanium boride and carbide is a plus. A demonstrated ability to publish journal quality papers is essential. Candidate must have a demonstrated background in powder processing and high temperature densification methods.
The candidate must be able to process high temperature materials. Facilities and equipment that will be utilized includes arc melter, hot press,
XRD,
SEM , Raman spectrometer,
DTA / TGA , optical microscopy and mechanical testing equipment such as microhardness and nano indentation.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Overview
The candidate will work within Prof. Habers group but is expected to assist in the design and execution of research. The candidate will be capable of exercising research discretion fulfilling the objectives of the funded research program. An understanding of characterization methods such as
SEM ,
XRD, Raman,
DTA / TGA
and their preparation methods is preferred. This is a highly complex position where the candidate must be capable of contributing immediately.
The candidate will be expected to present results to sponsors along with conducting research of the quality that can be published in high caliber journals.
StatementThere is a funded program that the candidate will participate. The candidate is expected to examine both commercial and synthesized metal borides and carbide alone or doped. We are processing multicomponent materials to alter their structure and properties, provide unique properties. These design strategies will be validated by novel experiments including 1) utilizing chemical synthesis approach to produce unique small cluster designed borides and 2) using a novel rapid carbothermal reduction process for synthesizing powders and arc melting that will result in a nanoscale and microscale chemically tuned ceramics.
These materials will then be densified, with and without pressure resulting in a new family of extended solids being produced that are atomistically designed with new properties.
These materials will be fully characterized from an atomic level usingHRTEM
as well as IR/Raman spectroscopy to microscales using X-ray diffraction and microstructural analysis coupled with
EBSD . The successful candidate should have a strong background in characterization of materials using electron microscopy. A thorough understanding of microstructure and crystallography of ceramic materials is essential. Familiarity in carbide materials, powder synthesis, processing and densification methods are essential.
All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of all pre-employment screenings.
