Recruitment/Posting Title Research Associate - Lead Microscopist Department Proteomics Salary Commensurate With Experience Posting Summary
The researcher will conduct experiments and provide technical expertise in the Rutgers CryoEM & Nanoimaging Facility (RCNF), and serve as an in-house expert on cryoEM for the Arnold Lab.
As the senior staff member in the RCNF reporting to the director, the researcher will interface with a variety of laboratories (intramural, extramural academic, and industrial) to apply cryoelectron microscopy (cryoEM) techniques to fundamental questions in biology being investigated by these laboratories.
The researcher will train and mentor students, fellows, and other scientists in cryo-electron microscopy. The researcher will perform and document cutting-edge cryoEM experiments independently.Experiments include:
cryo-transmission electron microscopy and tomography, cryo-focused ion beam milling, correlative microscopy, vitrification, cryo-scanning electron microscopy, and classical electron microscopy including thin section TEM.
The Arnold Lab researches the structure and function of human viral proteins and polyproteins, including from SARS CoV-2, HIV-1, and an array of viruses that are significant pandemic threats.
The researcher will spearhead implementation of cryoEM techniques and certain other techniques within the group towards understanding biomolecular function and expanding the methodological knowledge of the team.

Requires a doctoral degree in a related field. Requires at least 3 years' experience in cryo-electron microscopy.

Experience with electron microscope service and repair is desirable.
Experience with shell scripting is preferred.
Experience with insect cell expression is preferred.
Equipment Utilized
Laboratory equipment routinely used includes transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, focused ion beam microscopes, optical microscopes, plunge-freezers, high-pressure freezers, glow dischargers, electron beam deposition instruments, centrifuges, and incubators.
The researcher must have good eyesight to interpret faint images, and must possess sufficient manual dexterity to manipulate small, fragile electron microscopy grids under liquid nitrogen.
