OVERVIEW


The Athletics & Health Coordinator will support the Director of Athletics & Health in implementing the Athletics & Health strategy for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles.

The Athletics & Health Coordinator will increase the ability for BGCMLA clubs to be safe, supportive, and culturally responsive environments that intentionally work to enhance social-emotional skills.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the goals of the BGCMLA Athletics & Health Strategy and activate programs specifically designed to promote healthy lifestyles, encourage regular physical activity and address social issues such as obesity and diabetes.
  • Support the Director of Athletics & Health in developing and implementing all programming related to Healthy Lifestyles, including but not limited to
:

creating, organizing and coordinating sports leagues and recreation events, curriculum development and review.

  • Facilitating a variety of sports and physical activities for students while promoting good sportsmanship and safety among participants.
  • Monitoring and supervising the behavior of the students participating in sports and physical activities.
  • Using the Boys & Girls Clubs' philosophy, maintain age appropriate discipline among youth participants so that programs are carried out safely and efficiently.
  • Coordinating different varieties of sports/physical activities and implementation of those activities each day as needed, encouraging teamwork, and active participation.
  • Promote and stimulate program participation.
  • Create a positive environment that facilitates youth achievement.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to members of all ages.
  • Work with the members, helping them develop socialemotional skills and build positive relationships so they will have greater ability to thrive.
  • Maintain open communication with parents, BGCMLA staff, and the Director of Health & Wellness.
  • Transport children to functions including sporting events, field trips and special events.
  • Maintain program areas such as the gym, track & field, tennis courts, etc. at the Clubhouse to ensure quality and safety of programs.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles as needed to ensure safety and quality of programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

  • High School diploma or GED, minimum of two years of college experience. Prefer Fouryear degree in related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years of direct youth service experience and a record that demonstrates project management, planning and implementation of youth programs. Previous experience working with atrisk youth.
  • At least one year of demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience at a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization. Other relevant experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Hold a valid drivers' license and pass motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Pass criminal background check.
  • Child and Adult First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Pass (negative result) a TB test.
  • Physical capacity to participate and demonstrate expectations of fitness programs.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the mission, objectives, policies, and programs of the Boys & Girls Clubs; principles and practices of supervision and management; principles and practices of project management; principles and practices of youth development and quality programs.
  • Skilled in understanding of group dynamics and ability to run group activities; planning, organizing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating program activities; and working towards positive outcomes.
  • Ability to supervise, train, motivate and coach staff, assesses challenges; builds trust and respect among fellow team members; values the input and knowhow of other team members; organizes and prioritizes time well and focuses on completing assigned tasks with mínimal supervision; Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and takes pride in the quality of work performed.
  • Ability to deal effectively with members, including disciplinary issues.
  • Demonstrated ability in relationship building and working with young people and parents.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to develop solutions to problems with limited supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, Board members, community groups, and other related agencies.
