Description

Airbus Operations is seeking a Master student in the field of Fire Protection (d/f/m) to support our Fire Protection department in Hansford, WV.

The title of the thesis will be "Smoke Simulation in the Cargo Compartment using the Fire Dynamics Simulator".

  • Location: Hansford, WV
  • Start: As soon as possible
  • Duration: 6 months

The Fire Protection department at Airbus in Hansford is responsible for smoke detection and fire extinguishing in the pressurized area of all Airbus commercial aircraft.

It is crucial for certification that a starting fire can be detected within 60 seconds in each compartment of a commercial aircraft.

This capability must be demonstrated through mock-up and/or aircraft testing using artificially generated smoke.

With the advancement of computational capabilities, Airbus aims to use CFD simulations to reduce physical testing. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is a widely used CFD solver for fire-driven fluid flows. In this master thesis, the FDS will be thoroughly investigated to simulate smoke spread in a cargo compartment.

The results of this thesis will contribute to the development of a high-accuracy model to improve the smoke detection system design and ensure compliance with certification criteria.
